Modelling transition plans...
« on: July 15, 2011, 01:47:02 am »
Hi,

Is there a recommended way to model transition plans in EA. Ie model current state architecture, target/future state and critically the transitional steps/major mile stones that get you their?

I would like to be able to use EA to select a point in time and run reports that highlight the difference between the current state architecture and the architecture at that point in time.

I could use baselines, but am i right in thinking that in a shared model, all users have to work on a baseline once selected (as the model is shared) ? Could you use source control branching features ? Can users work against multiple branches (each representing a point in time) - if so how would you report on differences between branches ?

Hope this make sense, i'm sure its a common question - but i couldn't find any advice on this forum....

Regards,

Jon.

Jon

I've done this. I created multiple diagrams showing successive transition architectures. Using colour to highlight in each successive diagram what was being removed / changed / added.

Apparently, there's a "slide show" capability built into Sparx - if you can find it, it may be useful. But I use Snagit to capture an area of a diagram > paste into MS PowerPoint. When I need to communicate these views, I'm normally using PowerPoint on a data projector. </cue sneers about PowerPoint>

Personally, I don't bother with Sparx's so-called "reporting" capability, as it always seems to require programming MS Access ... pfft. "You could write a script to do that..." Sorry. Architecture Repository is not a play pen for coding. That's not a feature, it's a risk.  :)

Jon,

Diagram filters might also be useful when showing the differences between as-is and to-be
