how to use metrics for project progress and ETC

we would like to use the project manageent facilites of EA to track the project progression and the estimation to complete against the use cases.
for such purposes how can we user metrics?
for a given UC we can define metric but the only significant value we can insert is the weight.
How is it used within EA?
Generally it seems that these PM functionalities are not so powerful as the core EA functions are, these are just additional information attirbutes attached to element without any further processing.
is it true?
Are there available examples of customization using automation interface?
is it planned toimprove such module in the next releases (i use the 8.0)
