Embed or attach a document into model
« on: June 04, 2012, 06:27:02 pm »
Hello,

I searched a lot in the board but I could not find an answer to my question (neither a positive nor a negative answer):
How can I embed or attach a document into the model?

The document may be a Excel or Word document or anything else.
I am thinking a mechanism just like an email attachment. The file is stored inside the model and when double-clicking it opens in the intended tool for editing.

I an diagram I could set a hyper-link to an external storage location to the document. But as the storage location is not fixed a storage inside the model would be great.
All I can find is that I can embed RTF files, but I have an Excel document.

Any ideas or is it impossible?

Thanks a lot
Michael

Use a linked document. You can also associate elements with files (the Files tab of the element Properties dialog).

No chance of storing a file inside the model?
Your suggestion stores the file somewhere on the file system and simply refers to it from the model.

A linked document is internal to EA and can contain an RTF or a CSV (Excel) file. You can attach them to a range of types of element, or you can create a Document Artifact element that represents the linked document itself, and that opens the document directly when you double-click on it.

An Artifact element can represent files from a wider range of types, which might exist external to the model. However, if you press Ctrl+E on the element it directly opens each file for editing, which satisfies one of your requirements.

Does that get you any further ahead?

See http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/9.3/modeling_basics/linking_documentation.html

Note that actually the only document format that can be stored is rich text format.
To an extent you can kludge this by embedding a spreadsheet, visio document, image, or pdf within a word document and saving as RTF, but its not really satisfactory.
