You did. I was playing around with that matter myself and found the t_xref entries. Then I tried to remove the call operation assignment. The GUI did that. But I was not able to see any difference in the database.

However, as you are just going one way (i.e. assign the call) it's probably sufficient to create the t_xref entries.

Have you tried changing the assignment to the call operation via GUI once you created it via automation?
