Odd Document Editor behaviour

Something's happened where my Document Editor window opens so that it is not filling the window.  This happens when trying to view any type of rtf content.  I've discovered that if I switch to a different window, then come back to the document window, the document will now fill the whole window.

Any ideas why this might be happening?

Version 7.5.850 (I know)
