how to show 'submenues' in the toolbox selector?
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:41:31 am »
Hi. I wonder how can I show 'submenues' in the toolbox selector for my custom UML Profile (ie, when you click 'More Tools...' and have a list of the available profiles displayed). Similar to the one that ArcGIS or SOMF 2.1 has. Ideally I would like to have an ability to organize the stereotypes within toolbox as well (into 'subfolders' or at least control the order), but not sure if that's possible... Thx. Vlad.

Create a toolbox that is hidden.
In your main toolbox create an item that references your hidden toolbox.

Version 10 helps you to do this.

The order of items is controlled by the order of the attributes.

Multiple groups on a single toolbox can be achieved by defining multiple toolbox pages in a single toolbox profile. (Frequently this is elements and relationships)

Thanks for your replies, Simon. Is it possible to do in v9.3? If so, can you point me to the proper documentation? I'm not sure how to do what you've described ('Creating a toolbox that is hidden', etc). Thx. Vlad.

PS: do I have to use MDG to define custom toolbox? Or I can use profile import (as a resource)

Yes, it is possible to do in 9.3, all the examples you cited were done in that version or earlier.

See http://www.sparxsystems.com/uml_tool_guide/sdk_for_enterprise_architect/hidden_sub_menus.htm

In answer to your PS - you COULD create a Profile by itself and import it into the Resources window, and this would automatically generate a 'flat' Toolbox page with a template for each stereotyped modeling object in the Profile. However, apart from performing a quick test of your Stereotype Profile, we no longer recommend importing Profiles (or, indeed, MDG Technologies) into the Resources window, because it limits the facilities that an MDG Technology can provide, including the degree of customization you can perform. I don't think you could use the hidden submenus, for example, defined in a Toolbox Profile imported into the Resources window.

If you want a customized Toolbox, it would be far better to define a Stereotype Profile, Toolbox Profile and Diagram Profile in an MDG Technology that you import into %APPDATA%. These profiles and the other components of the technology can then work in combination to provide a comprehensive and tailored modeling facility.
