Viewpoint Spreadsheet
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:26:57 pm »
Hi,

hopefully the category is correct.

A simple question: we need a Spreadsheet viewpoint for our Enterprise Architecture Mangement. It should be similar to a simple speradsheet in Excel. It should support lines and rows, filters (autofilter), and colors. That's all.

Is there something like that available in EA? If not, is it possible respectively recommended to integrate Excel via OLE / ActiveX ?

Best regards

Viki

the eaDocX (Corporate Edition) Extension integrates Excel closely with EA.
If you mean that a Viewpoint is a diagram  of some aspect of your model, then just open the diagram's contents as an eaDocX Excel spreadsheet.

Many thanks. Is there a video available?

Where is the advantage between integrating Excel (if it is possible) and your solution?

For my opinion my request requires very simple features. I cannot imagine that this is not supported by EA. Am I wrong?

The only support for Excel in EA is to read- and write- CSV files.

(1) Is there a video available (e.g. on YouTube)?

(2) Where is (would be) the advantage between integrating Excel (if it is possible) and your solution?

At present there is option that you can use in an Element's Linked Document. You can try the context menu option: Insert | OLE Object and insert an Excel spreadhsheet.

This has it's limitation in that the view in document is limitted, but you can repoen it to view the full sheet.

@Viking
We have a video guide to eaDocX & Excel at  http://www.eadocx.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&layout=edit&id=356.
..and on the web-help at http://www.eadocx.com/help/index.html?eadocx_and_excel.htm
They should get you started.
There's also now a white paper on Power Editing with Excel at http://www.eadocx.com/web-downloads/white-papers/category/17-working-with-ea-and-eadocx
These should help you decide if you want to use the eaDocX approach, or the one outlined by Dermot.

Sorry Dermot but the internal OLE Support really, really sucks.

Another option: - Write an Addin, which

1. Saves your linked document to the temp path package.element.savelinkeddocument(file)
2. Open in your standard programm according to windows. process.Start(file)
3. Save it there and close your windows programm
4. reload the element package.element.loadlinkeddocument(file)

That's all to do :-)
