Report Generation - Speed it up
« on: May 30, 2013, 11:43:18 pm »
All,
I have created a report template based on one of the sample templates that comes with the EA product (latest version).

As such, it is taking a long time to generate the report which means that I can't use the tool while the report is being generated. This is even true if I choose to generate the standard RTF version of the documentation.

I would like to know if I can generate the documentation behind the scenes while I continue to work on the model AND if there are any settings I need to adjust to get it to work faster.

I checked the CPU and RAM on my laptop and they are not pegged, if you will, thus I don't think it is a resource issue. In fact, I have shut everything down, except for EA and it still takes a long time.

Obviously, I can choose to generate a small sub-set of the model, but wanted to ask the above just in case there is something that can be done.

Thanks in advance for any ideas,
Angelo

Dear Angelo,

there are a few possibilities, but the time of the reports is depending on the size of its reporting element/package.

Possibilities:

  • Export with XMI and manage the xmi file to a report (takes much time to create useful things)
  • Use eadocX (needs additional money and is not really faster, but maybe smarter
  • Use a second instance of Enterprise Architect  :)
  • Write your own report generator (difficult, takes much time but it the optimized solution  :))

Unfortunately I got the same problem with reports around 300pages take about 10 minutes - My solutions: I bought a new coffee machine.

Before you think about your solution, look around your template and switch from bitmap to metafile(if you haven't done this allready)

and

define your need for the reports.

In my means of working the report is just something you can sign manually and share it with others (partners, agencies, authorized bodies ...)   ;)

While working on the model i use an plain overview over the items and the package browser to find and edit elements in an quick way.

Best regards

I'd go with Stefan's 3rd option - you know you can run two (or more) instances of Sparx at the same time on your laptop ?
