Is this Sparx book relevant for Sparx 10.10 ?
« on: April 10, 2014, 09:56:08 pm »
I am using Sparx 10.10 and am a newbie. There is a book on Amazon named:  "Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems, Version 9.2 ".
Would this be worthwhile, or is it not helpful because it uses Sparx 9.2.
I am looking for the simplest ways to get past beginner Sparx knowledge to improve my skills to be low intermediate.
Also wondering if for learning purposes it's best to use my Sparx EA 10.10 or if it's better to download the beta of Sparx 11. Also wondering if Sparx 11 can co-existent on same Windows computer with Sparx 10.

This link has 3 books that we always recommend for our customers to use:
https://leanpub.com/entarch
 :)

I would start with Version 10 now and then move up once you get the basics - and yes, they can coexist.
Version 11 is just in RC1 now and may likely get another round of updates soon.

To answer second part of your query regarding having 10 & 11 in your system.

That is possible, you have to rename your EA folder in your installation directory to something else (e.g. EA_10) before installing EA 11

you can then refer to whichever exe's you would like to access

You should find the book useful because the way of thinking about modelling hasn't changed significantly since EA 9.2. However some of the menus and dialogs shown in the book may have changed, so you might find that slows down your learning a little bit.

The book is from our Central European sister company. They have updated the German edition of the book to EA 10 and may have plans to do the same with the English edition. It's worth asking them. Click on the "Sister Companies" link in the bottom right corner of this page...

Thanks for the helpful answers.  I just purchased the 3 recommended books.  Was surprised to find a 4th book on that site as well published on 2014-02-09: "From EA Newbie to EA Expert".
Here is a direct link to buy that book only: https://leanpub.com/EA-in-10-days
It's 147 pages, and looks like the best book for me to start with.
I also posted a question on the sister Sparx Forum (in English, although the forum is in German) to ask information about a Sparx EA 10 version of ""Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems, Version 9.2 ". No response yet.

I just received this response from the (German) Sparx sister company regarding the book I found on Amazon named:  "Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect from Sparx Systems, Version 9.2 ". (I corrected his grammar a little):

Currently the English version is for Sparx EA 9.2, and the German for EA 10.
The translation for EA 11 is in progress and will be published within the next 2 months.

I have begun work on a revised version of Peter Doomen's Leanpub book, "Teach Yourself Enterprise Architecture in Ten Days".  I converted his pdf (EA-in-10-days) into a docx file (EA-in-10-days.docx).  Now, I am editing the docx file to add more images (created via TechSmith Snagit 11) and will amplify passages in the text that are overly terse.
I have not yet contacted Mr. Doomen but can't imagine he will mind. I will donate the improved book back to him with no wish for any compensation, only the wish that he incorporate the improvements into the book he sells.
Getting this book polished, and later creating a separate edition for Sparx EA 11 will benefit the Sparx community.  If anybody knows how to contact Mr. Doomen, please let me know.  So far all I can find is his Twitter handle.

Mr. Doomen appears to have removed references to a website or to an email address from his books and from Leanpub and replaced them with a suggestion to follow him on Twitter:

The suggested hashtag for this book is #EAin10days.

Perhaps you have an oldish copy of one of his books from before its Twitter-ification?

Thank you.  I just wrote to Peter:

Peter,
I am editing your book to add more images and to clear up passages that are confusing to a beginner such as myself.
I have attached a copy of your book with the changes I have made so far. My last change is on page 32 but I will continue until I have gone through the entire book.
Of course I will never, ever give anyone a copy of this book!!! It is your book and I give you 100% permission to use any of my changes in any way you deem fit.
I posted about this on the English Sparx forum
