Instructions for trying the new RC version
« on: April 18, 2014, 02:21:08 am »
Can someone point me to, or supply, specific information as to how to install the RC version of EA (11) without impacting the current version. I saw some reference to changing a directory name but it wasn't sufficiently specific for my understanding. Is it the install to directory? Is it the EA directory in Appdata?
e.g. C:\Users\me\AppData\Roaming\Sparx Systems\EA  ?
Do I need to point anything to the new directory?

Rather be sure than sorry.

Just rename the current EA program folder and run the installer. Just ignore that he's claiming something about the old version. When he's done you have a new EA program folder and you can still run the previous version from the renamed folder.

So, by "EA Program folder" you mean C:\Program Files (x86)\Sparx Systems\EA ?
Wouldn't all my shortcuts referring to that need to be changed?

Does it use any other shared directories (such as the one referenced above) for MDG files and possible overlay what I currently have?

Please forgive my seeming a bit thick.

Would the same result obtain if I had the installer install to a different directory than the default?

BTW, thanks for all your books. I just purchased the shape script book and am about to purchase the one for BAs (for work).

Sure you would need to change the links if you want them to point to the old installation. But alas you could go one step further and rename the new folder (btw: yes that is the right location) to EA11 and rename the old  one back to EA. Then you would need to open EA V11 from the new folder.

The standard MDG come along with each installation and are stored inside the EA programs folder. So they are still fine. The registry takes care. If you have your own MDGs set via the Advances those settings are (hmmm) either in the registry or in the %APPDATA% folder. So still available.

Just give it a try as described. You will be able to restore anyway.

P.S. Thanks. I hope you find my books helpful. If so, just post here. If not, tell me confidentially ;)

Yes, your books are useful. I wouldn't have bought just about all of them otherwise.  :) They give good insight into what goes on behind the scenes of EA.
