Creating stereotypes
« on: July 22, 2014, 02:29:01 pm »
hi,

I've noticed there's two ways to make stereotypes.

One is by going to Settings / Uml Types and creating a new one from there. However, other than specifying a base type and how it should look on a diagram, there arent a lot of options - in particular what I want to be able to do is to have a stereotype that has a default set of Tagged Values.

The other option seems to be to create a Profile package and then create a "stereotype" object from the Toolbox. Here I seem to be able to specify my Tagged Values - however, I'm unable to reference this when I add a new element. How do I get the stereotypes I've got in my profile to show up when I add a new element?

My main requirement is to be able to define classes of elements of certain types. I must be able to search against that type and also, each type should have a list of consistent tagged values.

I'm attempting to use stereotypes to do this - if I'm completely on the wrong track, please let me know.

You probably should explain in more detail what you have actually done. You are roughly on the right track, but the way to do what you want to do depends on what release of EA you are using, whether you are just using a Profile (and importing it into the project) or embedding the Profile in an MDG Technology.

Read through the Help topics on creating Profiles and MDG Technologies, and re-post with some specific points at which things start to go wrong or don't make sense.

At the end, you should either have some customized elements in a Toolbox that already have the stereotype and Tagged Values, or a similar element type that you can drag onto an existing UML element to add the stereotype and Tagged Values to it.

Also, it may be worth watching the "Profile Helpers" demonstration on the following Webinar page regarding Extending EA.  This walks through various related topics including defining Stereotypes and Tagged Values in a Profile and then building them into an MDG Technology.

Please note that this demo was recorded in EA 10, so some menus may be slightly different.

Hi,

Yes thank you. My organisation is using version 10 of EA.

Thanks for the links. I will do a little bit more research on Profiles and MDG Technologies as I'm unsure what they are.

In version 10 (and 11) of EA, you cannot actually add a stereotyped element to the Toolbox using a Profile alone. You have to embed the Profile in an MDG Technology.  Follow the suggestions we provided, especially the one from Aaron about watching the webinar on Profile Helpers.
