EA Setup for offsite teams
« on: December 29, 2014, 05:30:53 pm »
Hello,

We've just purchased licenses for EA, and I was wondering what is the best way to install EA under the following scenario:

1. Analysts are in customer sites, mostly recording requirements

2. Architects are at our company premises, working on system design.
Design starts when the analysts are about 80% done recording requirements, sometimes sooner.

If we go with ODBC , it means we have to change company firewalls and client firewalls to allow ODBC traffic. Not possible.  Cloud is also not possible since we do not have AWS accounts.

Any other ways anyone can think of?  We are thinking of having the analysts record requirements in Excel, and import them in EA, but this sounds like is not the way to go.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Then you still have following options:

- Terminal solution: Make sure you have some kind of terminal solution running on a server in the HQ and make your analysts connect to that (possibly over some kind of secured line/protocol).
- Version Control:
  - Online: Your version control server is accessible from outside your network. Analysts in remote locations can check-out and in.
  - Offline: Your analysts check out the part they need to change when at HQ. They update that part when they are at the remote location. When back at HQ they check-in the updated part.

Geert,

Thanks a lot for your answer.

The Terminal Solution could work for us.  The version control just doesn't strike me as the ideal solution for a team.

We are now thinking of using Confluence / Jira plugins and allow the analysts to enter requirements via Confluence and then import them into the EA project.

Thanks again,
Chris,

Eve

You don't need AWS to use the Sparx Systems cloud server.

Set it up on a local server with access to your shared db and allow https connections.

Simon, thanks a lot for your answer. We have setup cloud services on a internal server and exposed that through our firewall.
Works like a charm. :)

Hi Chris,

Looking at installing cloud services as it is easier than installing the client on all systems.

However, in the document http://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/11/projects_and_teams/setting_up_the_server.html it says run the installer for cloud services but I can’t locate the download.

Do you need Sparx to provide a link to cloud services or is it available to download once you have registered?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Mike,

I'm afraid you have too high hopes for the so called "Cloud Services".
Cloud services merely exposes a repository via http(s). It still requires you to install the client application on all machines.

Hi Geert,

Thanks for the reply. It is a shame this is the case, but exposing the repository via https is still useful to me rather than utilising direct database connectivity from the client.

An architecture model for all this would be useful (if only we had a tool that allowed us to produce these in a standard way ...   [smiley=thumbsup.gif])

Thanks

Mike

I guess EA is designed with Visio  ;D
