Mac OS X Installation
« on: April 07, 2015, 03:23:58 am »
When I downloaded EA 12, I read something which indicated it might be possible to install it on a Mac. However, I have always been under the impression that this is only possible for a dual boot Mac with Windows installed; this is because EA used/uses an Access database.

Is this the case? Or is it actually possible to install EA under OS X? If it is possible a list of steps will be much appreciated.

Well, if Windozers talk about Mac compliance they mean either Wine or something like Parallels. I use the latter but also managed to get it running via Wine.

Thanks for the reply, I will research this later.

I am also assuming that EA can run on VM Ware Fusion 10, is this correct?

Sure. EA does not require fancy graphics stuff like some games ;)

I've got EA V12 working under WINE on Mac OS X Yosemite.
Most things work ok but did find the following problematic.
  • Colour picker when trying to select a fill colour from another object just sets the screen to black.
  • The graphs for dashboards are invisible for some reason

I suspect there is something to configure under WINE to make these work but I haven't had time to investigate.
Happy to help

I've been using Sparx EA since version 9 running on parallels and I find that it provides seamless integration with Mac OS X.

I also tried it on other virtual machine solutions like Virtual Box and VM Ware, but I found that parallels was actually optimised to run windows under Mac OS X with minimum performance impact. It also offers a great visual integration with its 'Coherence' mode, with makes the windows apps behave like a Mac OS native app (at least from the UI perspective, there are still some other functionalities that use windows native functions - like file management that will still use Windows Explorer).

There is a good (and comprehensive) benchmark analysis on the following link:

If you run (or plan to use) other windows apps on your Mac, I would definitely recommend to take a look at the VM options.

Hope it helps!  ;)

It also works well on VMWare Fusion.

With Fusion / Parallels you can also have the host Mac run a DBMS server, e.g. MySQL and configure the VM so that Sparx EA can connect to this DBMS.

The downside with WINE / Crossover is that I've yet to be able to use it with anything other than a file-based project e.g. .eap. I've never managed to get it to connect to a hosted DB server - seems to be the ODBC setup. I try not to use .eap because the JET DBMS seems to be particularly sensitive to being interrupted so if there is a crash etc. it can corrupt the file and you can lose the project.
