Notes on diagrams
« on: December 06, 2005, 01:55:21 am »
I see in version 6 of EA that if you float the mouse over an element in a diagram, a tooltip/hint appears which includes at least the start of the element's notes field.   This is useful up to a point, but not on hardcopies of the diagram.

From time to time I find myself duplicating the contents of an element's notes field within a note item on the diagram to emphasize certain attributes or simply for clarity.   It would be VERY useful not to have to duplicate this text but have the option of having the note on the diagram take the text from the notes of a particular element.

thanks

Hi Graham,

this can be done, create a note attached to an element, then right click on the line between the element and the note and click on "Link to...." or something alongside those lines (I do not have EA with me and do not remember the exact item name). This way you can link the note on a diagram to any of the element's internal features, not only a note but also a constraint, scenario etc.

Hope this helps!

Bruno - thanks for your reply.  It does help up to a point, but is not quite what I was getting at.

What I would like to do is have the content of the "notes" property of the element (or at least the text of the notes property) appear in the diagram without having to duplicate the text.   If I've understood correctly, with your method I could almost achieve this by just typing the text into the note item and linking it to the element and not bother with the element's own note property - but that means the note is not directly visible except on that particular diagram.

Hi Graham,

actually, it is the other way around :-) You type the note into the element's note field, then you link the external note to the element's note field as I have described above, which will display the element's "internal" note in the "external" note on the diagram. Not sure if I am making any sense, just give it a try :-)

Bruno - thanks for your perseverance with this - Thanks to you I have it working !   The steps are:
- add a new note but leave the note content blank
- use "note link" to associate the note with an element
- right click on the connector between the note and the element
- select "Link this note to an element feature..."
- select "Element note" from the feature type dropdown list.

thank you very much for helping with this !

Graham - no problem, EA is full of these hidden features, some of which are actually really cool :-)
