Apostrophe typos on website
« on: February 06, 2006, 05:17:47 am »
If you Google on site:sparxsystems.com.au "lot's", you will see that lot's more is incorrectly used instead of lots more three times.

Also, it's (= it is) is misused (use the same Google trick); all the below should use its:
  • At it's simplest
  • bring up it's context menu
  • takes it's topmost default
  • in it's current form
  • have it's own local SCC project
  • it's powerful built-in requirements tracking
  • It's interfaces represent
  • This Add-in in it's current form
  • evolved from it's roots

All I can say in return is .... Eats Shoots and Leaves.

(Again, if in doubt, "don't be evil".)

PS. Thought the grocers' (!) apostrophe applied to plural's [sic !] mis-apostrophised.

Excellent book!  Thoroughly recommend it!

Yes, I know (and I didn't mean to imply you didn't!).  It's just the other abuses of the apostrophe don't have a catchy name.  Also, statistically, misusers of the Grocer's misuse the other usages.

I don't have a copy of Lynne's book to hand. does she describe it as a Grocer's (the apostrophe used by a grocer) or Grocers' (the apostrophe used by many grocers).

Interestingly, the two forms provide different results on Google!

On Google, it's also found as Grocers [sic] apostrophe - absolutely wrong!

(slightly abashed)

I've corrected the possessive pronouns in the help file; I'll let someone know about the grocer's apostrophe on the website.

Same as British English (Cambridge, not Oxford) which creates a few problems when the subject matter we deal with (Unified Modeling Language) is expressed in an American English vocabulary. This means that the language of EA needs to be American English and the supporting documentation should probably match. We are actually all writing in a foreign language! (Doesn't excuse the poor punctuation though.  :-[ )

Neil

PS There is at least one valid use of the grocer's apostrophe: when creating English-like plurals of foreign words. A more controversial use is following abbreviations, e.g. is it CD's or CDs? Probably the latter is still correct but the former will become the accepted form by sheer weight of usage.

It's not controversial CD's is WRONG! ;D

And hence the inevitable decline of Western Civilisation :o

However, thanks for your attempts to stem the tide, Neil!

I don't object to American English per se - just as long as it doesn't call itself English or International English - they should consult some of the other colonies. ;)

Yes, but I imagine that some of George W's nuances must get lost in the translation to English ...

PS. I imagine you mean US American - there's a lot of North and South America that aren't USA.

Actually, that was a direct quote from one of my former clients. Having lived in both Canada and Mexico, I am quite aware that North America is more than just the US :-)

Funny how far away from UML does the conversation get sometimes...
