Sharepoint integration
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:40:59 am »
Hi,

I experience difficulties while trying to open an EAP file from out sharepoint (2003) site. In fact, EA does not fully support sharepoint and operates on local cache copies of files. This is opposed to the MS tools which work nicely on sharepoint folders as if they were network folders.

I'm forced to download/upload the document when I want to edit it.

Any solution ???

Avoid to use SharePoint or better MS completely :-X

No need to reply to this one, I'm just a bit sarcastic today.

This is not best practice when working with SharePoint as you're working with a file based database within the Sharepoint database.  On top of the performance issues and the lack of webDAV support for Access (which is why you must check the file out) there are other reasons this is bad.  First, I don't know how big your EA file will get, but the default MAX file size in Sharepoint DocLibs is 50M which you may or may not hit.  Since the EA database that you're working with is really an Access based DB, I could easily see the file expanded as most Access DB's do (unless you do the usual 'Compress DB'.

I'd recommend using a Central Repository model, but it also depends on how many people are accessing the model and what your remote links are like.

my two cents.

Hi,

To open a specific filetype from SharePoint this particular filetype should be "registered" with SharePoint.
For example, before trying to use PDF files within SharePoint in a proper way (see as well JimB's reply earlier) it is recommended for one to read the following MS KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832809
This will fully explain all necessary steps needed to have PDF files working within SharePoint.
Something similar should be done for EA file - that is, perhaps Sparx Systems should create an IFilter file.

An interesting link I just found last week regarding EA and SharePint is this one http://www.eausergroup.org/
There are some interesting link and posts there.
Hope this will help,
Vasile
