Limits on MDG Technologies?
« on: February 04, 2010, 02:57:20 pm »
Elsewhere, the Sparxians have commented that there's effectively no limit on the number of QuickLinker entries one can have.

This topic is about the same question regarding MDG Technologies.

Is there any practical limit to:
  • The number of MDG Technologies that can be specified (available) to an EA instance
  • The subset of the above that can be active enabled at one time?
Assuming there's (effectively) no practical limit (to at least the number that can be specified), should we give free reign to our imaginations and specify pretty granular technologies to allow the modeller to "mix-and-match to their heart's content?

I'm not aware of any limitations.  I am currently running with 36 enabled technologies providing a mix of code engineering, profiles, patterns, searches and rtf report templates.

(With the terminology on the MDG technologies dialog only 1 can be active at a time, but as many as you like can be enabled.)

Thanks Simon,  I accept the wrong nomenclature and I'll amend the original post accordingly.

However, it's raised the question what does one only active at one time mean?

From previous discussions with Sparxians (both on-line and off-line) it seems that an element (for example) doesn't know where it came from.  So what aspects of EA are "active" when the MDG is active (not just enabled)?

The help file has this to say about it.

You can make an MDG Technology the default interface to Enterprise Architect. Depending on the MDG Technology selected, this can change the way Enterprise Architect windows are displayed and override the Enterprise Architect UML Toolbox pages with pages specific to that Technology.
