Poor Documentation
« on: January 10, 2013, 10:44:52 am »
I have analyzed all your white papers and videos. I have found a few videos on youtube about EA. I have bought your book "Project Management with UML and Enterprise Architect", Dietmar Steinpichler, Horst Kargl

And after all of that I want to tell you that you guys have very very very very poor documentation. You have created amazingly powerful tool but as this often happens - apparently all the existing documentation is not enough to ramp up quickly in learning for those who are just starting to use EA.
Do you know what happen when people can't learn things quickly and easily? They are switching to another tools which more edible and you are loosing your money.

I personally wish to see step-by-step guidance about creating models - requirements, analysis, etc. using EA as tool. Look at such tools as Qt, Visual Studio and others and consider them as a good sample of well documented products.

In regard to the book - it is valuable but it contains a LOT of mistakes =( If you guys are writing a book for English-speaking audience than make sure you we will understand you. When I'm reading the book I've impression that I'm reading Deutsch in English letters.

Firstly, I'm glad that you find EA to be a good tool.

I'm sorry that you've found the documentation so far to be less than perfect. There is a lot of effort dedicated to our documentation. One of the resources that we have that you haven't mentioned looking at is the 'Learning Center'. This is a window inside EA that contains links to step-by-step instructions for pretty much anything you can do with EA. Most of these are written in such a way as to allow them to be printed to a single page for your reference if you desire. Since the learning center was introduced I believe it has been in visible in each of the default window layouts provided. In version 10 it is also available with a large link from the start page.

I sincerely hope that will help you, but if it doesn't it's usually easier to address specific examples. We currently have over 2000 topics in the help file. Comments that are variants of "it's bad" don't provide any starting point for improving it. I believe that's what you want, which is why you posted here in the first place.

Regarding the book, personally I haven't read it. Although I think I have seen a copy lying around. It was written and published by our German partners. We don't have any control over its content.

There are now a few free editors writing for EA. Their perspective is (in general) more user than tool oriented. I've heard that a book about BA (which might also point into PM direction) is on the way (Ian from  EADocX knows more).

I'd like to start a book about PM but I have not the resources right now.
