Items missing from Element menu
« on: January 14, 2016, 01:38:29 am »
Hi

One of my team members is missing a number of commands from the Element menu, specifically Maintenance, Testing and Project Management. I can only assume that this is something to do with user permissions, however we do not have security enabled on our current project.

The user in question has previously worked on another project which did have security enabled, we have tried amending his permissions in that project and also re-applying the license key to his installation, but nothing appears to work and surely permissions are on a per project and not per user basis?

I have tried using Tools - Customize to add the necessary tools to his menu, and while I can drag the command (e.g. Maintenance) to his menu, once I exit the Tools - Customize window the command still isn't available.

Can anybody help please?

Hi Graham,

Yes, permissions are per-project. So if you're all using the same edition of EA, this looks like a command set problem. Check under View -- Workspaces and Commands (in EA 11, not sure if it's moved in EA 12) and make sure he's not using some reduced command set.

Command sets are intended to reduce GUI clutter, and can be quite useful if you take the time to create the sets you need. Unfortunately the sets that come with EA aren't very useful and tend to omit crucial functions, and (doubly unfortunately) during initial installation EA throws up a less-than-helpful dialog which can easily fool people into selecting a reduced command set which will cause exactly the behaviour you describe.

Command sets are selected per installation, not per project, and I think the selection will remain even after a reinstall. So it's pretty subtle. Several other users have reported similar issues in this forum, and I've seen it with several clients.

HTH,

Here's an earlier post where I explained it a bit better. Or at least differently.
