Migration from MagicDraw to EA
« on: June 04, 2009, 10:59:29 pm »
MagicDraw offers a plugin to migrate from EA to MagicDraw, but is there any easy way to Migrate from MagicDraw to EA? I have tried exporting and importing XMI 2.1 but the result seems to be that a lot of information is lost. The only diagrams that seem to be imported okay is state and sequence diagrams.

Am I missing something or is this what I will have do with?

Thanks in advance for any possible tips.

Bump!

I might be faced with the same challenge in the near future: migrate a MagicDraw model to EA.

Are there, now that we are 6 years further, any tools or experiences that can help?

Thanks

Geert

If you can create a CSV file from MagicDraw, with objects and relationships, our platform, ModelFlow, can import this content to elements and relationship/connectors with properties for both.
See this link and contact me if  you need more info:

I'm pretty sure I will be able to import elements and relations using xmi export/import, but I'm more worried about the diagrams, and all tool specific stuff.

In the depths of my memory I believe I exported a model from MagicDraw to XMI and then imported all elements and relationships into EA without a hitch. No diagrams though.

Found this very old article, the same principles may well apply today but may work better

http://kontrawize.blogs.com/kontrawize/2009/10/converting-a-magic-uml-model-into-enterprise-architect-format.html

Don't have access to MagicDraw to try anything out, and I believe last time I looked the trail verso limited the number of elements created and may even have blocked export to XMI

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

Yeah, I was afraid diagrams would become an issue, and I don't really feel like writing my own Magicdraw to EA diagram converter...

If anyone has already done this, be sure to let me know!  :)

Under Tools --> Import there is an option to import an MDZIP file.  I've used this on Magic Draw models to import everything including the diagrams.

Version: EA 12.0.1215 ultimate

Did you manage to get this to work?
I tried to import one of the MagicDraw file available from Practical guide to SysML Book site : http://booksite.elsevier.com/9780123852069/?ISBN=9780123852069.
Selecting the mdzip file and running the import remains in the "Analysis selected MDZIP File" status.
