RTF Report Generator: Alternatives?
« on: June 24, 2010, 07:24:07 pm »
Hi all,

considering the recently made expereinces about the RTF report generator (this item seems to be _a little bit weak_   :()
gives rise to ask for alternatives.

Does anyone know some alternatives?

Regards

I've created my own report generator in the past.
It's a bit of work, but I think it pays off in the long run.

Ah! Here you got that advice. Write down a hundred times: I shall not use the RTF generator.

A good article. I concur in most places. Document creation is inevitable for any company using a modeling tool (for many reasons).

Here I don't agree:
Quote
...This document could be something in the form of a Rich Text Format, MS Word ...
The Standard.
Quote
Generating an average document (~50 pages) should not take much more then a minute.
But then an odyssey of many hours starts to bring the document in a format which suits the QA/CI of the company.

Like you I spent a lot of time writing a doc generator and it does pay off. However, I used LaTeX instead of Word and this payed of even more. Instead of doing hours of layout we can really click-and-print model aspects. It was just important (and difficult) to find out the aspects which needed to be brought to paper.

Hmm, I must not have been clear enough in my description.
What I meant was that the whole process of generating a document (including formatting to please the audience) should not take more than about a minute.
So no more "odyssey of many hours", but in extremis maybe adding the version history or something like that.

LaTex might indeed be a suitable solution, but that depends on the circumstances, environment, and available resources (people).

I have seen and still see Word odysseys. From my point of view the last two words are synonyms.

Taking the LaTeX way is definitely not easy as you have a longer startup. But once you've done it, you get brilliant documentation. Here at my current customer I simply "did it". And the result proofed it to be the right way.
