Drag and drop Tagged Values
« on: April 19, 2016, 05:39:11 pm »
For nearly a decade, I've thought:  "Wouldn't it be great to be able to drag and drop Tagged Values from the tagged Values window onto a shape on a diagram and have that set the dragged Tagged value onto the destination shape?"

We can do it with items on the browser, so why not from the Tagged Values window?  This would - to an extent, get around the problem with the setting of individual tagged values.

Thoughts?

Yes and no. While this could be a cool feature I think that when using MDG one should not mess around with tagged values and keep the ones that had been designed for the use with certain stereotypes.

I agree with qwerty.  The danger I can see is downstream you'll have really inconsistent documentation.

It would be better to drop a template set of tagged values that the user was forced to complete before moving on.

If you're willing to use a different window, the element browser has that capability.

Thanks Simon!

Just what I was after!   Should have asked the question a decade ago!

I take it I can drag anything off the Element Browser [Alt+9] onto the the element on the current diagram.

Non-sense (in this case).

The Tagged Values are just properties that weren't added to the basic element.  Users can create inconsistent models with anything.

In this case the Tagged Values are optional.  If they were mandatory, they would be added to the MDG - which ONLY gives you the minimum mandatory (to be present - not even to be set) set of Tagged Values, it doesn't inhibit any other Tagged Values.

"Without loss of generality" - this does the required job exactly!

Close to it anyway. I don't think you can copy relationships even though they are shown there.

That's fair enough - they are binary rather than unary, after all.

Speaking of relationships,  they are my BIGGEST use of tagged values at the present.  There doesn't seem to be any equivalent mechanism to drag the Tagged Values - is that correct?

I finally tried Dragging Tagged values from the Element Browser onto the diagram.  Worked a treat!  EXCEPT EA didn't change the GUID of the "dropped" tagged value.   :(

Generated a pile of fails in the Integrity Checker [Shift+F9].

They can be fixed, but shouldn't need to be.
