Insert Related Elements... - sub-optimal
« on: May 18, 2016, 05:32:05 pm »
The Insert Related Elements... dialog has been "Improved" in recent versions.

However, some aspects of it are sub optimal.  The concept of the set of Relationship and Element types self-adjusting on filter changes, superficially seems cool...  But it is fraught with problems and can become VERY ANNOYING VERY QUICKLY!

Why is this so?  Well the reason is that there is NO "stickiness" to the selections.  If you do multi-level searches (especially in a whole of enterprise situation), you can experience a combinatorial explosion in the number of such potential entries.  So, if you select some small proportion of the set, and you change the filter, the set resets all the "selectors" (to "Yes").  You only need to do this twice with a large number of potential selectors to start muttering at the developers.

What's missing is a "sticky" checkbox (default ON) that says:  as you change the set of potential selections, keep the previous set so I don't have to redo it.

What is also missing, is the ability to open the set selection sub-dialogs to show a larger set of selectors (perhaps, double-clicking the sub-panel could open it up). In any event, once the larger sub-dialog is opened, it should also show the Select All/None (and possibly Reverse) to aid creating the correct selection.

Lastly, the element type/stereotype/metatype needs to be added to the result window to allow grouping & sorting on those to allow easier selection from large result sets.

Thoughts?
