Issue with elements based on Note type
« on: January 26, 2011, 03:20:40 am »
I'm trying to create some custom note types in an MDG technology. I have several stereotypes that extend a MetaClass of Note.  I've used the _metatype attribute on them and my toolbox works (I can drop these new note elements on a diagram).

However, they do not show up as one of the listed types on the element list when I select my MDG technology and they are not available to add  as a new element. I also see they aren't available in the default set of elements either. Is a note something special?  Or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

Greg,

Do "normal" notes show up in the element list?
I think indeed EA views notes as no ordinary elements.
Might be a good question to as Sparx Support. The best way to reach them is to use the Report a Bug link on the bottom of the page.

Greg,

I couldn't resist and added an extension to a note in a test profile.
Then I exported it to xml, and imported the profile in my resources.
It now shows up as an element in my toolbox, and I can add it as a new element on my diagram.

I indeed saw that I can't add it as a new element on a package, but that seems the be the normal behavior in EA. The reason is (I think) is that you can't see note elements in the project browser. So a note element that is added to a package would be unreachable.
In fact a note that isn't shown on any diagram is in fact floating somewhere in a vacuum. It still exists, but there is no way to ever use it.

You could of course send in a feature request to treat Notes elements as regular elements (thus showing them in the project browser.)

Geert

Hope this clears things up.

Geert,

Thanks for checking this out. I'm going to ponder my approach. Perhaps notes aren't what I really need here. Thanks for our help!
