Import a profile as a model
« on: July 10, 2011, 12:28:37 am »
OK, I really a point in the right direction.

I asked a similar question the other day and probably phrased it wrongly.  I've since discovered a few things by experimentation.  What I really want to do is extend the Archimate mdg/profile.  I have found the Archimate.xml file and I can decompose it and understand the various parts inside it.

I can also copy it, make a few changes to it and import it as my own custom version of that profile.  But what I really want to do is import it into a metamodel package, so I can use the designer surface to extend the profile, instead of just hacking away with a text editor.  It seems like it should be possible but I can't put my finger on how.  Maybe I need to write some kind xsl transform from profile to XMI and then import as xmi?

I'm assuming the folks at Archimate use Archimate itself to create profiles, so maybe there are some tools for doing this?

Just guessing, but likely Sparx has created the MDG (not too hard probably as it mostly contains "pictures"). So MDG could easily be imported into EA but in fact you can't. The reason is likely that Sparx will prevent people from changing their MDG (and then claiming support for malfunctions or simply for copyright reasons). However, you only can modify the XML or you write some transformation to convert it to an XMI file.
