XML Import issue
« on: December 08, 2016, 04:07:58 am »
Hello all!
I am a total rookie with EA, and have been assigned a task to migrate a large data model from IBM Rational System Architect (v 11.4.3.1) to our new Enterprise solution of Sparx Enterprise Architect (v 12.1.1230).  I am a ROOKIE with Sparx and IBM Rational... but I am a solid geek when it comes to IT and software in general...

So, the root of the issue...  Rational can't (wont) export in XMI... and there is no option to export the whole DB.... What I can get is an XML export... but, it is XML version 1.0 (encoding=UTF-16).  When I try to import into a package, I get the "Sparx Unknown XMI Exporter or Version" error.

Does anyone know a way to bring in an XML 1.0?

Thank you in advance for your help!
I bow down to the expertise I see in this forum every day.... you all are amazing.

Rational had an external product to export XMI (I can't recall the company, though the name is on my tongue). Using that it was possible to migrate to EA via XMI.

q.

P.S. Unisys was the company: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21131368 It was difficult to get that add-in some 10 years ago. So good luck with that.

P.P.S. I just realize that you are talking about RSA and I about Rose. Uuhh. AFAIK you should be able to export XMI from RSA.

P.P.P.S. There are a couple of commercial offers: One here http://www.sparxsystems.com.au/products/3rdparty.html or here http://toolbus.de/convert_rational-system-architect_to_enterprise-architect/. Googled "migrate rational to enterprise architect"

I think the product you are thinking of is Infosphere.... and yeah, we tried that too. No dice.

Rational System Architect does not have an XMI export function. (Rational Software Architect does)

"XML 1.0" only says that information is structured as XML. It doesn't provide any information about the data inside. As an example, look at the publish dialog in EA. All of those will include an XML 1.0 declaration at the top of the file.

Thanks for the info Simon!
I appreciate the effort.  I guess we better get started keying it in. :/

Hi Les,

Just as a tip, if you have a lot of text in your model, and if you can get the text out of System Architect in some structured manner, EA allows you to drag-and-drop text into various places, the most important being diagrams to create new elements (names), and Notes fields of dialogs.

Come to think of it, if you can drag text directly out of the System Architect GUI that'll obviously work as well.

HTH,
