Mixed Editions Environments - is it viable?
« on: February 12, 2020, 09:15:01 am »
We may be embarking on an experiment to see if we can use Sparx EA for certain forms of Master Data Management - directly by business users.
We currently have a small number of floating Ultimate licences.  For most of the business users, if they require the ability to write to the repository (i.e. they will be managing the master data items), the p=Profeessional licences seem to be all they will need as we'll have set them up with all their supporting infrastructure.

So we could end up with a mixture of Ultimate & Professional (and, depending on how we expand, maybe other licences) floating licences.  Many other users will have read-only access via the viewer.

Does anyone have experience with such multi-edition environments?  Is it "not worth the price differential"?  Give the number of potentially lower cost licences, the cost difference could be substantial.

TIA,
Paolo

Professional doesn't allow you to connect to a database and doesn't support scripting.

I would go for Corporate (which is what 95% of my clients is on)

Thanks!  I'd forgotten with the transmogrification of the editions over recent times.

Have you tried such mixed environments?

I agree with Geert, it should work with different editions (and, in theory, it should also work across multiple versions).

In addition, depending on how you structure the core repository you may still be able to use the Professional edition licenses. We do have a number of people currently contributing file based repositories to a relational repository. It is not optimal but works as long as everybody working on file based repositories are dealing with non-crossing/overlapping areas of a common relational repository.
