Hi Sparxians - what have you done to our forum server?
Time to move it off KP's old laptop onto a proper computer!

Seriously though, this is making it hard to look for stuff on the forum, when 30-50% of requests get a timeout. An no, there's nothing wrong at my end - all other websites are fine.

FWIW it was slow @ 7:15 pm WAST.

Trying to look at unread posts since last visit required reloads after timeouts in many cases.

I've sent an email about it to Support.
They replied that they had not been able to reproduce, but are looking into the issue.

I haven't seen any slow down.  It may not be the server itself.

I just got the weirdest reply from Sparx Support after I told them it was slow again and even https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ reported the website as down

Quote
Hello Geert,

Thanks for the reply.

We have performed all the checking we have available and nothing indicates that the website has not been offline, which is confirmed by people using/interacting with the website non stop, while there are periods of time that the website does not receive traffic from Europe those time match the night, which is to be expected.

Have you tried another browser, clearing your browser's cache and done a hard refresh?  One other user who reported similar problems has since been resolved by doing this.

When we use   https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com   it replies:
"
Sparxsystems.com Status
Is sparxsystems.com down right now?
It's just you. sparxsystems.com is up.
I replied the following
Quote
I don't understand your reaction.
This problem was not only seen by me, but by several others (as you can see in the forum)
It was even confirmed by an independent website like https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ as you could see in the printscreen
Also none of the other websites I visit have this problem.

Yet you seem to think that the problem is somehow on my side?

To be clear, the website was never really down, just reacting to slow that half of my request ended up timing out (and probably so slow  https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ decided it was down)
So obviously when looking at the server logs you would still see a lot of traffic, possibly even more than when the website was reacting normally as I have to do another request after a time out before I can see the website.

Anyway, this morning it seems to be fast again (I didn't reboot, nor clear my browser cache, it's even the same chrome session that was running yesterday) so let's hope it stays that way.

It is a bit of a weird response, but if the Ozzies aren't seeing what we see then the issue is neither at our end nor at the Sparx end but somewhere in between.

Which makes it someone else's fault and nobody's problem, I guess.

It's definitely possible that issue is somewhere inbetween.
But it this was my website that was crippled like that, I would definitely see it as my problem, and something I needed to get fixed.

When I posted my previous about an hour ago, everything was working fine.

Now, it's busted again.

Exactly the same here. Of course: the Sparxians see their steam server located at the same place. Everything is fine. Why bother?

Same from UK - was better, now back to ab-normal.
Come-on @Spaxians - lets get this fixed.

Seems like something happens about 0900 GMT, which corresponds to close of business in Australia (+8 -- +10), which causes the issues and which doesn't resolve itself until after close of business in Europe (+0 -- +2).

Someone running a backup? Distributing software updates? Downloading massive amounts of porn?

Whatever it is, it seems like it's something scheduled, which makes it seem likely it's somewhere in Australia (though not necessarily at Sparx) since it happens during local off hours.

Hm. :/

I'm setting myself a reminder to check-in on the website during this evening.

I probably won't be able to fix anything, but I can probably raise the issue a little higher if I can confirm one.

FWIW, Eve, I've noticed slowdowns around 7 pm WAST.  When I check-in in the mornings 6 am WAST, all seems good.  As others have commented, it seems to come and go.

Two people in Europe were on the Forum on Saturday 29th, and reported no problem. It does seem to be a weekday thing, and/or something between certain hours as Uffe suggests.

The forum posts reporting problems are from Europe, with one Canadian post (which side of Canada?), and no USA posts (so all OK in the USA?). Paolo reports a problem at 7:30 pm Western Australian Time. Eastern Australia and NZ seem to be OK.

I will also log in later tonight and over the weekend and see whether anything happens. By tracking times in the countries that have reported a problem, we might see a hot spot.
