Azure Platform Icon Set
« on: April 14, 2020, 05:59:23 pm »
Am I going senile or did I recently see a post asking about whether EA had (or was going to have) an Azure Platform Icon Set - similar to the AWS and GCP sets?

TIA,
Paolo

No, I can confirm. (or maybe we are going senile together)

But I can't find it quickly when I do a search.

That's why I asked, I searched and couldn't find it either.

Well, define "recent", but I found two threads with OnT discussions.

https://www.sparxsystems.com/forums/smf/index.php/topic,42290.msg254390.html
and
https://www.sparxsystems.com/forums/smf/index.php/topic,43349.msg256897.html (last post a week ago)

But no official word beyond "it's being considered," which, well.

Anyway.
My theories are always correct, just apply them to the right reality.

In my opinion there is sufficient demand for it.

Back when we released the support for the two icon sets we have I used a combination of scripting and manual processing to import their icons into EA. I hope support still knows where they can get the resulting XMI. It may now be outdated and isn't as polished as the officially supported variety but it should help.

PS. I suspect I didn't think the process I used would need to be reproduced and that I didn't document it in any meaningful way. From memory, a linux script to convert all of the svg files to png with a consistent size, drop each directory of files onto an EA diagram as artifacts. EA script to remove the extension from the resulting object names.

Turns out to be a "bug" in the search function (surprise, surprise).  Like you, I "knew" we'd had a post within the last week, so I set the search target to 99 days.  (Conserving electrons, my bit for global warming).  No "hit".  Extend to the default, 9999 days, many hits.

To me, that's a bug, .

When I search for posts, in a specific time frame, I'm searching for posts, not threads.  I suspect, that only the thread start date is used for the date filtering.

Roy and Eve, can you confirm or deny?

Paolo

PS: At least, Geert and I aren't going senile yet!!

How do we turn your opinion into a set of icons for us to use?  ;)

I have some users "champing at the bit" to use Azure icons.

In terms of the behavior of this forum I know no more than you. Apart from occasionally deleting spam I'm just a normal user.

For the azure icons the best thing you can do is send a request to support. I don't know how much it will take to tip it into being a development priority.

Done!

Fellow users - as Eve suggests, if we don't ask, we won't get!  Put in your requests!

I did the same as Eve back in 2019 and imported the Azure symbols into Sparx EA by dragging them into a diagram and running a script to fix the image names.
You can find the original model and the Azure Symbols MDG.xml file on GitHub.
https://github.com/EASunshine/Sparx-EA
Just treat the Azure Symbols MDG.xml file like any other MDG file. Put it in a folder and point Sparx EA to it. The Azure Symbols will then be available to use via alternative image mechanism.

Hope that does the trick for now.

For anyone who wants to use an updated set, or use a different resolution etc. Here is the (linux) command that I used to create pngs that can be dropped onto EA.

Code: [Select]
find -name *.svg | sed -E "s/\.\/(.*)\/([^\/]*)\.svg/mkdir -p \"png\/\1\" \&\& inkscape -e \"png\/\1\/\2.png\" -D -w 64 \"\1\/\2.svg\"/" | bash
If you're wanting to add them into the image manager instead of a structured model of image artifacts you can skip the child directories.

Code: [Select]
find -name *.svg | sed -E "s/\.\/(.*)\/([^\/]*)\.svg/inkscape -e \"png\/\2.png\" -D -w 64 \"\1\/\2.svg\"/" | bash
