Element Relationship Management
« on: January 14, 2023, 03:12:16 am »
Is there a way in EA to manage Element relationships i.e. add, modify, and remove without having to add the two elements to a diagram and drawing a line?

I'm trying to add a link between numerous sub-requirement packages and a single higher level requirement and would love to do this without having to create a diagram just to do the linking.

Not having a relationship visible in a diagram is not a so good idea. Only if you see the connected elements you can grasp the semantics of a relation in greatest possible detail. If you only have them in a RD you might run into trouble. I NEVER create relations only based on a matrix for exactly that reason. Having a matrix as additional source is fine, but secondary (my POV).

Relationship matrix is the intended use but I agree with qwerty

Workaround: make a diagram with the requirements and sub requirements, link the requirements with the sub-requirements and (set visibility to Hide connectors in all other diagrams)
This way you still have a dumbed-down diagram with the displayed relationships

A variation of Bob's suggestion is to view a diagram as matrix after having added all requirements and sub-requirements.

Same, same, but different. As usual in EA :-/ We once were stuck when we found that either of both had/not abilities the other had. So we ended up forgetting both in the mainline and leave it to users to suffer the one or other death.

But yes, this is an alternative.

Thank you all for your comments they have helped very much.  Concerning the other diagram views though, is there a setting I've missed somewhere where i can change the default view to Matrix from Diagram?

I don't think this is possible but, in my onion, it will be a great improvement; specially showing a diagram as a matrix by default.

I agree with Geert, the better way to create relationships without creating a diagram is with a relationship matrix.

Look the user manual https://sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/16.1/the_application_desktop/elementrelationshipmatrix.html

I hope that could works!
