Which UML diagrams does a Business Analyst create

Hi All,

   Wanted to know as a Business Analyst, whose main role is requirements gathering and making the development team understand the client requirements.... which UML diagrams should he/ she know?

there is no one answer, it really depends on the whole workflow in your company, on constraints such as what kinds of documents are you required to produce and, most importantly, what information does the development team expect from you (and what kinds of diagrams are they able to read).
Does the development team use UML? Which portions of it? Does the development team include the System Analysts or such, or are those pure developers?
Generally speaking, a Business Analyst should definitely know Use Case modeling. Even if the rest of the company does not use UML, it is quite easy to present Use Case model to them in a form they can understand. Activity Diagrams would be next. Class diagrams possibly, it would be nice but all too often I see companies that stop short of that. Sequence and Communication diagrams would follow.

Either way, plugging UML into a Business Analysis team without having the rest of the groups involved in the workflow to use it will provide limited value. If the rest of the groups use UML, drive your decision by what do they need, expect and can use.
