Sorry for not being helpful here :)

But your question is a bit like "I would like to build a house, what is the best way to do that ?"

In fact, as always, it depends.
You can easy learn how to draw UML diagrams but this is not the whole story. The primary story is not how to draw but what to document for which purpose.
Eg. you have asked for the functional aspect of the model but there might also be a structural/logical view which might be necessary: Do you have to fill a database (how is it structured ?), deploy features (how about parameterisation and physical structure?), which components are involved, etc.

There is always a purpose of modelling and some stakeholders for it who have to be satisfied. Depending on those stakeholders (customer, product management, developers, installation staff, maintenance, etc.) you will have to chose the level of granularity of your documentation- what you will document and then how.

So you should ask yourself those questions first and then choose the right tool (eg. diagram) for your purpose.

BTW there is plenty of literature around how to model in a appropriate way and I get u sed to reference Craig Larmans book "Applying UML and patterns" as a good starting point.

(Hmm, I believe I should also write that sort of book because I happen to repost this sort of information a lot :D Maybe I can write one in which I advertise Craigs book and let me be paid for this :D )

I hope this helps a bit further.

Oliver

Oliver, why don't you just give a link to this answer? (Of course no money.)

Maybe because I have spent too many years in the customer project business and I believe I tend too much towards customising the answer for the topic and person in question :o
