Need to have both activity and sequence diagrams..
« on: February 28, 2009, 02:40:38 am »
I'm relatively new to EA and have been using Activity Diagrams.  I find the ADs to be very flexible and most levels (techs and non-techs) are able to relate to them.  However, there are always a group that prefer the SDs.  So, rather than recreate each in SD, is there a way to generate SDs out of existing ADs in EA?  I'm sure the need to have both diagrams is not uncommon, are there other alternatives ?

You might be able to do that with EA 7.5 (not prior) using Transformation Templates -- which is not a trivial task and learning it has a learning curve associated.
AD and SD are different in nature, therefore converting from one to the other is not a straightforward task -- you must define your own rules to do that.  I invite you (and the other group) to consider shifting from a 'preference' to a 'purpose' view of UML diagrams because the purpose of each diagram type in this case is different (ad) flow of activities versus (sd) interactions between specific entities -- I hope this helps.

Thanks for the response mdlng-coach.  I do agree that these diagrams were designed based on purpose and not preference.  So, I am now  doubting that a diagram to diagram transformation is even possible.  Even if some degree of this is available, I'm not sure I would be entirely happy with the resulting SD.
