Is it possible to extend an existing profile?
« on: December 10, 2009, 05:14:08 pm »
Hi all,
I would like to extend other UML profiles without interfering with their source.

Is it possible to extend a profile with, say, a new tagged value on an existing stereotype and have it merge so that the new tagged value can be applied to the existing stereotype?

To be more concrete, say I would like to add the concept of a Role to a BPMN1.1::Lane. Can I create some sort of profile with attributes matching the existing BPMN1.1 one and add a tagged value attribute to the stereotype? I suspect so but the things I've tried so far haven't worked.

Cheers,
Andrew.
Regards,
Andrew Warner.

Andrew,

I remember a similar question on this forum from a while ago that got a useful answer.
Search for the terms "extend" and "profile" (using the top left button) and I think you should find it.

Thanks Geert,
the only thread I could find seemed to be about automation. That is, merging profiles can only be achieved using add-ins.

Thanks for the heads-up though.

Cheers,
Andrew.

I think this http://www.sparxsystems.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1248511442/6#6 was the topic I remembered.

From that thread,

I think the only solution is ... editing the BPMN-XML-File via Editor.

Thanks heaps Geert and KP,
I am trying my darndest to avoid editing the BPMN xml. It just adds another maintenance headache.

Perhaps we can create Relationships between elements in different profiles for use in the toolbox and quicklinker. I might give it a go.

That way we could at least add semantically meaningful relationships on diagrams, perhaps in the table view.

Thanks again,
Andrew.
