How to export use cases to MS Word
« on: November 24, 2011, 01:59:24 am »
Is there a way to export my use cases with constraints and scenarios to MS Word in EA 9.1?

Look at the help on RTF Report as that generates an Rich Text Format document that can be opened in MSWord. You can then save it as MS Word Format.

I've tried the RTF report using the Use Case template. It's nice, but the steps in the Basic Path are not itemized instead it is a one long string. It does have the number before each step though.

The Alternative and Exception Paths don't even have any numbers in front of the steps. It's just a long string.

Is there any way to correct that?

Modify the Use Case RTF Template to your desired outcome.
Have a look at the use case scenario template.

I created a template using the Use Case Scenario template, and I put a check mark beside the "Element" > "Scenario" > "Structured Scenario". I got a nicely itemized steps for the Basic Path, but I couldn't find anywhere in the template to itemize an Exception or Alternate path. Let me give an example how we usually want our use case written as follows:

UC100 Check Balance
Main Scenario
1. The System searches the Account table using the customer ID.
2. ...
3. ....

Exception Path
1a. If the user ID is  not found
1. The System notifies the customer that the user ID is invalid.
2. The use case ends.

Alternate Path
3a. If the System ....
1.   The System does this ....
2.   The  main scenario resumes at Step 2.

I notice EA does identify an exception or alternate path with a Step number (i.e. 1a, 2a) which associates with one of the steps in the Basic Path.  However, the template doesn't somehow put the Step numbers beside the exception or alternate name in the Exception or Alternate detail section right after the scenario steps.  I also notice that right before the template lists the scenario steps it lists the exceptions and/or alternates WITH their corresponding Step numbers. So, how can I add the Step number in the Exception or Alternate detail sections?

If you need a really professional-looking document, have a look at http://www.eaDocX.com: we have some examples of what EA Structured Scenario use cases can look like, with hyperlinks between the basic path and alternates/exceptions. We can also show links between use cases & actors, and use cases & requirements, if that's what you're doing.
There's an example at http://www.eadocx.com/index.php/pdfsamples-2.
