Installation error
« on: April 01, 2008, 08:44:43 am »
Although I understand that Vista 64bit is not listed as a supported OS, I am providing this information in hope that it won't be too hard to be addressed...

When I try to install the latest (7.1 build 828) EA trial on my Vista Business 64bit box, I'm getting the following error dialog and the install performs a rollback:

Error 1935: An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.MSXML2.publicKeyToken="6bd6b9abf345378f",
version="4.20.9818.0", type="win32",processorArchitecture="x86". Please refer to Help and Support for more information.

I hope that this will be an easy thing to address and I will be able to run EA on my 64bit box soon!!!

Thank you.

Hi Stefanos,

We have tested Vista on a 64 bit machine successfully, but have found that the installation can be dependant on local and domain security policies.

Do you have UAC turned on or off on your 64 bit box? If so, please run the installer by right clicking on it and selecting "Run as administrator" (even if you have an admin account, processes under Vista are only started with normal permissions). This affects where registry values and shared files are installed to.

If that fails, try installing the application "For this user only" rather than "All users".

If you are a member of a domain, please consult with your administrator regarding domain permissions that might prevent the application from installing.

If that fails, (and only if it is possible) try turning UAC off for the installation and see if it succeeds then.
Best Regards,

Michael

Wow! Thank you for the super quick response!

I actually used the "Run as Administrator", as well as, attempt installing for All versus current user only. Made no difference.

The machine is part of the corporate domain, however the current user belongs to the local administrators group.

How do I access and disable the UAC "feature"? What group policies should I need to be concerned (and talk with my domain admin)?

Again, thank you for your promptness!

Hello again!

I just tested the build 828 installer on our 64bit machine and it installed correctly.

- UAC can be turned off from the "User Accounts" section in the control panel. However, please please please check with you domain admin before you do this as it may be against security policy.

- In terms of domain policies, the domain admin would probably be more educated on this area than me. I'd check for any settings affecting registry virtualisation, component installs and install permissions.
Best Regards,

Michael

I've also just checked some forums regarding this issue, and the most common cause is that there is some other process using the XML parser at the time (eg most spyware apps like adaware). So if you can try to minimise the amount of programs running while installing that may help.

If all of these options fail, can you please try running the installer through msiexec with debug logging turned on.
Best Regards,

Michael

Well,

It is kind of funny but here's how it worked out.

I turned off the UAC, run the installer and it failed with a similar problem identifying that the XML parser was not installed properly but didn't rolled back.

However, when I run EA everything seems to work fine!

Thank you so much for the support. I will be more than happy to provide any kind of additional information you may need in order to troubleshoot what was going on with my system.

Hey Stefanos,

That's fantastic news. I'd love to get the debug log of the installer anyway just so we can see where the problem is coming from and work to resolve it. If you could email it to [email protected] marked for my attention that would be fantastic!
Best Regards,

Michael
