Can't see custom stereotype in Project browser
« on: May 20, 2008, 08:44:14 pm »
I added a custom stereotype according to the "Custom Stereotypes" section in the on-line help. (Except that I can't see a browse button as described in step 4 ("To associate a Metafile with... "))

I then followed the steps under "Show Stereotypes" in the help section "Set Default Project Browser Behavior", re-started EA end expected the custom stereotype to appear in the Project browser, but it didn't...

What am I doing wrong? I use EA 7.1.

First, I think I saw something about this recently. AFAIR this was resolved, either in a recent build or scheduled for the next build or two.

But I could be wrong on this. You should check recent release notes - unless you are using the most current build of EA, in which case the problem persists. Also search the forum for recent threads concerning this. They'd need to be in the past few months to be relevant.

While you're at it, make sure your technology is active when you load the project browser. You might need to set the technology and then reload the project (or something).

Please let us know if any of this turns up an answer.

David,

I think it's not about profiles, but about stereotypes added in the Settings-UML dialog.

Mr. or Ms. stereotype,

it seems to me you expected the "Show Stereotypes" option to show stereotypes as objects in the project browser, but that's not what it does. It's only effect is that objects having a stereotype will be shown in the project browser as "<<stereotypename>> elementname".

Unfortunalety for a lot of things EA (unlike most other UML tools) offers no option to show them in the project browser: stereotypes, data types, connectors, state machines, concurrent state regions, notes and more. It's a common issue in the "Suggestions and Requests" section of this forum.

Aah....

If you mean you want to show a different graphic for stereotyped elements, you are definitely out of luck.

I have asked for this capability - at least in the context of profiles - several times. To the extent that I have received any answers, this is not on the roadmap for future feature roll-out.

Perhaps if Sparx were to receive enough feature requests - use the link near the bottom of any forum page - this might change. Other than that we are out of luck, and likely to remain that way.

Exactly, I misunderstood the Help documentation.  :-[ Thanks...

Now, what I really wanted to do was to somehow "open" my custom stereotype, and define tagged values for it. I don't understand how to do that... (due to a bug in my brain?)

It's not a bug in your brain, but a strange concept in EA. You cannot define tagged values on sheer custom stereotypes.

What you need is a profile or better still an MDG technology containing a profile. It's all in the "Extend Enterprise Architect - Software Developers Kit" chapter of the EA help.

And if you are playing around with tagged values often - whether or not you use a profile - remember that you can dock the tagged values window. This can make life a great deal easier.

I have corrected the Help for the Stereotypes tab of the UML Types dialog - you are correct, there is no Browse button. You click on the Metafile radio button and the Assign button.

I have also made the Help on the Default Project Browser Behavior page more direct, so that it states and shows exactly what the Show Stereotypes option does.

Sorry for the confusion.

Changes visible with the next release of EA.
