SOLVED: 7.5: Beware of modifying RTF templates
« on: March 06, 2009, 10:58:11 pm »
Hi all.

This is a warning for all beta testers of 7.5 beta2.
If you are modifying RTF templates in 7.5 they will no longer work in 7.1, instead they will lead to a "unexpected end of file" error when creating reports from it. Opening such a template in 7.1 with the RTF editor crashes EA.

Sparx is aware of this issue, if they can reproduce it, a fix will follow.

Regards,

Oliver

Update: See my post below for fixes.

Hi Oliver,

I have just started to customize RTF templates (sigh, how I hate RTF compared to HTML or Open Office  :'(), and also noticed some strange behavior: As soon I add a section in the template (copied from the standard use case template), some of the already present fields in the other sections are f***ed up due to additionally inserted {} brackets around the fields. Even worse, this could only be seen after I have closed the RTF-editor, generated the report (noticed it's file size is too small) and opened the generator again. I am also using 7.5 Beta, did anyone else experience this, is this a new bug in 7.5?

Yes I noticed this too.  I just manually deleted the extra {}.

Same here. Just downloading beta3 to see whether this has been fixed.

Besides the additional {} there are also other formattings lost in the template, e.g. headings, bulleted lists etc.
Is this issue already reported to Sparx, or should I write a bug report?

Hi Günther,

Check out Beta 3; it was released just after your post. The release notes don't give much info about this, but I believe Sparx has been aware of the general issue.

Whatever is 'left over' after you verify any corrections, you should report to Sparx. Remember to use the bug report for the beta. And please post back here to keep the rest of us in the loop.

[I am not trying to create work for you. I just figured you must have a project and RTF document already set up as a good candidate for this.]

David
No, you can't have it!

Just resent a bigger package to Sparx- the RTF issues are still in beta3 so I believe we will have to wait for the final product.

Regarding the opening templates saved in 7.5 in 7.1, we suspect that should be fixed.  So just try saving in beta 3 and open it again.

If that doesn't work, you can get around the problem by exporting the template to rtf format in 7.5, and importing it in 7.1.

I don't have information on any of your other issues at this stage.

I am afraid it is not. We still encounter this on several installations.

Update: Exported a template in 7.5beta3 as rtf, then tried to import in build 834 => EA crashed at import.

I did not expect this that soon ;)

SOLVED 7.5 beta2: Beware of modifying RTF template
« Reply #10 on: March 17, 2009, 07:47:42 pm »
Thanks to the help of Sparx the issue got resolved.

In our templates a PNG file was included which was not properly parsed by the EA releases prior to 7.5

This led the application to crash.

Regards,

Oliver
