v8 - Existing Layouts go west...
« on: February 08, 2010, 07:34:45 pm »
While acknowledging that there is a completely new Workspace Manager, there should be an option to "best fit" the existing defined user layouts to the new environment if upgrading.

I spent a long time developing some specific layouts and they just "disappeared"...

If you (had) export(ed) the EA400 key from the registry your layouts would have been saved. I tried it with my colleagues so we have common layouts, colours and options.

You're probably trapped now without this export :-(

b.

btw.: Each time I installed EA from a new version in the past my layouts were gone. And it's likely dangerous to re-import the registry from a former version. So yes: best fit would be nice. But a controlled export (reference data!?) would be the better solution.

Of course I did...  I used it to continually reset the display when a bug in the window management kept moving some windows up the screen - every time you loaded EA (now thankfully apparently fixed).

The problem (as you indicate) is the the internal registry keys have all changed...

There is no export/import facility provided that I can see.

Paolo,

They'll still be there in the registry, but as you say there's no formal mechanism to get them out. Best to request a feature request for this one and we'll see what we can do.
Best Regards,

Michael

As I mentioned, I DO have the .reg file.  Now that I've found the file and noted it is also a .reg file, would it be relatively easy to convert the entries?

I'll submit a formal Feature Request, anyway.

It should be easy to convert them. The major difference being that the keys in the eaworkspace file are relatively named, whereas reg files are absoloute.

If it becomes a big enough problem we can provide an official solution though. If you do use your old workspace layouts, please note that they won't contain initial positions for the new dockable windows, so they won't appear in the expected positions when first made visible.
Best Regards,

Michael

Understood (about the new windows) - that's why I said "best fit".

Well, I had a go at what Michael suggested should be possible - a quick substitution of the Registry pointers and all seemed to go well enough.   :)

So it shouldn't be a big deal for Sparx to add the functionality to make it "official".
