At least one instance where EA (7.5.850) creates the NULL parentID values is the deep copy of a diagram.
Every element that gets copied, and was previously nested under an element now has a NULL value as parentID.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a diagram nested under elementA
2. Add new object objectA on the diagram using the toolbox
3. Copy the diagram
4. Select a package and paste the diagram (choose deep copy)
5. Investigate the t_object table and notice that there are now new rows with parentID is NULL

[edit]Same thing in 8.0.855[/edit]

According to the release notes this issue should have been fixed in v 8.0.856. I haven't tested it myself though.
