Auto Name Counters issue (or misunderstanding)

So I understand how auto name counters work and I'd like to use them, but they only seem to take effect when I drag an element from the toolbox into a diagram. This works well for certain elements for me, but not for others...

I have element types where I tend to use the Project Browser right-click menu to add an element. I'd like it to still use the auto naming feature even when I do this, but it doesn't. Is this intended? I can see how it would be, but I'd love a way to override it (other than dragging elements into a diagram). I was hoping to get away with simply naming my elements and letting the numbering system do its magic.
