I agree.  I would like this option as well.

Just curious... Have you tried creating these in MS Word to see what type of RTF it generates when you Save As and RTF file?

I would imagine if you could figure out the RTF, you could do what you want.

But, I haven't played with it.  So, I may not know what I'm talking about.  :D

Suggestions and Requests / Trouble with Issue Tracking
« on: May 02, 2005, 05:17:33 pm »
I was excited to see that EA has both "Model Issues" (in the System view) as well as "Element Issues" (In the Maintenance View).

But I either don't understand how these are supposed to be used, or these really need some additional features.

Model Issues:
  • I love the way the issues are included in the RTF.  But the section is not bookmarked and not easily included in an MS Word document when you are using the "Insert Linked File" option described in the help.
  • When you press the "Close Issue" button it automatically applys the changes.  Then, the OK button is disabled.  This is so confusing.  I don't want to cancel changes.  But if I press cancel it doesn't cancel.
  • Model Issues not linked to a diagram or anything.  I guess this is OK if element issues worked a little better.

Element Issues:
  • How do I see all the element issues?  I can only see an issue if I click on the element.  I need to see and correct all issues.
  • I like the issues included in the RTF with the element.  But I would like include a summary at the end of the document as well.
  • I need a way to see all element issues, then click on them and go to the element to correct the issue.
  • Need to create an element issue for a diagram.
  • Need visual clue (similar to bookmark) if an element has any open issues.
  • Need simple method of creating an issue for an element.  Maybe include an "Issues" tab on the properties dialog.
  • What exactly is the difference between an "Element Issue", "Element Change", "Element Task" and "Element Defect".  These all seem like some kind of action.  Seems like it could be collapsed into one thing and then have a type.  That would make it easier to use, display, filter, etc.

Yes.  Yes.  Please.

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Glossary Improvements
« on: April 11, 2005, 09:43:00 am »
I also need the Issues & Tasks to be bookmarked in the RTF output.  I am currently opening the RTF and doing this manually so I can bring these sections into my master document easily.

But some fixed bookmarks (Glossary, Issues, Tasks) would be very helpful in the RTF.

Is there a way I can do this myself by messing with the RTF templates??

Thanks

Suggestions and Requests / Glossary Improvements
« on: April 04, 2005, 08:54:19 am »
I have some suggestions that would make the glossary much more useful:

1) Automatically create a link from any term in the glossary with a pop-up that shows definition.  This would allow terms to be explained as you read the model and create simple navigation.

2) Same thing, but in the HTML documentation output.  This one might be easier because it is functionality provided in HTML.

3) Add a default bookmark in the RTF output so I can include the Glossary when using a master document.  The bookmarks in RTF are great, and the master document concept is very powerful.  But the Glossary is not bookmarked. :-(

If I had to choose, I would select #2 & #3 above and delay #1 (in the tool) due to complexity.

Thanks

Suggestions and Requests / Re: Autolayout and "Details on Diagramm"
« on: March 28, 2005, 07:11:14 am »
Agreed.  The "Details on Diagram" also gets in the way when you use a Sequence diagram because I can't control the top position of the classes I drop on the diagram (Lifetime elements).  When I use the Details on Diagram option, the lifetime elements need to shift down just a little.

My misunderstaning.  Thanks for the reply.

I just tested this, and it sure does relate directly to the model.  And yes, I did mean the EAP file.

Thanks again.  I just misunderstood how it works.

The glossary feature in EA is very nice.  But the items I add to the glossary seem to be global on my machine for all models I open.  They do not seem to be related only to my model.  I would like the terms to be in the model, so it goes to everyone.  I also don't want the terms to carry across to every model.

Since you have the "global" capability, I don't mind if it is there.  It may have many uses.  But I would at least like the option of specifying a term as "local" to the current model.  Then, when I generate docs for this model the term is included.  When I generate terms for a different model, the term is not included.

Thanks

I found the conversation.  Here is a link if others are interested.

General Board / Finding Unused Operations
« on: August 30, 2008, 04:06:06 am »
I have created a large number of sequence diagrams.  Each sequence diagram uses "operations" as the system message, placed directly to a class.  This means, I created class objects and used these for my diagrams.

As I add sequence diagrams, and system messages, I am adding the appropriate class and operations on the class.

My problem (and my question) is, how do I determine which operations may not be used, or how often a particular operation is used?

When I create a system message from Class-A to Class-B (calling operation GetData) I am actually saying that Class-A is dependent on Class-B.  But EA doesn't really see this as a dependency.  I draw this dependency seperately (which I wish I didn't need to do).

But now, I need to find out if there are any operations that are not being used.  I also need to know (at the operation level) a total list of the dependencies.

Is there any way I can get this information from EA without just going through every diagram manually and then taking notes on paper?

General Board / Set Default Status
« on: April 15, 2005, 08:34:34 am »
Whenever I create a new element in EA the status defaults to the value "Proposed".  Is there a way I can control this?

I would like to change the default to "Draft" and then change them to proposed when I am really proposing the changes.

Thank You.

General Board / Re: Wots the "Output" tab for?
« on: April 22, 2005, 06:42:26 am »
OK -- I just tried Ctrl-Shift-8... and my screen turned upside down. :-)

Really...  It has nothing to do with EA though.  I have an HP monitor that can be pivoted to either portrait or landscape mode.  It has some software running in my tray called Pivot Pro.

Apparently, that shortcut key is used by Pivot Pro to turn the screen upside down.

But what a shock it was to see my model flip around.  And using the mouse upside down is a trip.  It took me a minute to realize what had happened.

ok -- I realize this isn't an EA thing.  Back to topic.  ::)

General Board / Re: filtering diagram types for doc generation
« on: April 21, 2005, 01:36:58 pm »
There is a much easier solution than scripting anything.

Method #1 (my preference):
Simply generate your RTF with all the stuff in it.  This is your baseline RTF.
Now, create an MS Word document with the links to the various packages or diagrams.  There are instructions in the EA Help file.    Go to help and select Contents tab.  Select the tree: Creating Documents | Using MS Word | Bookmarks.  This shows you all the steps you need.  The only problem is the help doesn't tell you that MS Word 2003 has a drop-down on the "Insert" button and you have to select "Insert Link" from this.  Otherwise, it is easy.

Method #2:
Another simple method, if you really want to generate a simple RTF is described in help.  First follow the steps in help under Creating Documents | Virtual Documents.  Then, follow the steps in Creating Documents | RTF Documents | The RTF Dialog | Save as Document.  This will make it easy to regenerate the document.

Hope this helps.

General Board / Re: new project in ea 6.1

I love Jeff's idea.  That would be an ideal solution to the problem.

This would really be ideal and would provide the fexibility to support both the current feature (as a default location) as well as configuring the location to use network or SCC.

I hope someone @ Sparx sees this idea and decides to implement it!

Thanks Jeff.
