Suggestions and Requests / Re: Multidimensional relationship matrix

Totally agree with the other posts.

I had great expectations after reading about this in Rosenberg's book p388.  This looked like a v.useful traceability feature.

However as you cannot specify a package level my interest level dropped quickly.

Use Case Modelling is the one I've read.  I can quite believe that anything else they've done would also be worthwhile.

The Rosenberg book and the CD Enterprise Architect for Power Users will get you a long way.  You won't get the best out of ea without them.

Although nothing to do with EA as such I have found the Bittner/ Spence book very useful indeed, supplemented b Overgaard/ Palmkvist.

What is lacking is how to structure ea to deal with developing a product over several releases.

Here I have a core model and drag in use cases from projects as they get changed/ augmented over release cycles.  Have no idea whether this is the official way but it seems to work!

I'd agree with Roy - the only book/ article in sufficient depth I have found is the Rosenberg one.  We only really got to grips with EA once I'd read this.

Personally I think its mandatory reading for EA users - and worth every penny even if its hardback!

As discussed on the following thread:

http://www.sparxsystems.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1252069982/5#5

EA needs a resync package (and sub-packages) option.  Currently there is only a global resync which can take a long time - see Martin's comment.

The synchronisation option is a bit of a nuclear option and has been mentioned in other posts, if you could be selective then it would be much more useful.

Where svn and ea go out of sync and in the absence of anything better I:-

1) Find out what ea thinks the status of the package is - query the ea t_package table
2) Get sub-version to agree by using subversion client to commit or check out.

Usually that does the trick.

If you still get problems I've been able to use tortoise repo browser to break the lock on the lock owners pc then get the lock again.

Hopefully something better will come along soon!

No problems encountered (yet!) with the collabnet client.

given a free hand I'd be tempted to use tortoise.  I've found tortoise repo browser to be vital.

I'd use diagram notes.

If using version control you can enter check in notes - but this does not sound sufficiently visible for you.

Look at the strip guids checkbox option when you import.

Occasionally I have exported to xmi, imported to a new package stripping the guids and copied what I need from there.

Hi Paolo

Sorry for the delay, forgot to check the notfiy of replies option.

Last time I tried the RM I followed the instructions from the Doug Rosenberg book - p388.  The RM generated was for all packages in the database - so I got far too much back, I could not specify a particular package and its sub-packages.

I last tried this on EA6.5 and gave up in disgust.  I'll try and find the relevant packages and repeat using 7.5.849 if you think this has been changed.

My biggest frustration with the RM is that you cannot specify a package (and its sub-packages).  When I found out about this limitation it became as much use as the proverbial chocolate tea pot!

Please add this to the list!

Bugs and Issues / Re: Action as Activity instance?
« on: September 09, 2009, 06:35:48 pm »
I admire Geert for wheeling out the superstructure spec but for the sake of clarity I usually resort to the UML reference manual.

Here an action is described as "primitive activity node.... " and (p136)  - I don't see how you can imply instantiation.
Its there to flesh out detail.

So I think Paolo is correct

Being pragmatic however the key thing is whether the audience understands the diagram!

Bugs and Issues / Re: Subversion revert and delete

My experience is that you need to rely on subversion and tortoise more than you should to make integration work.

The  rule of thumb is that if you make subversion and ea agree, then everything is peachy.  You need to be aware that ea records check in state in the t_package table.  If you hit difficulties then look up the package here.

My biggest gripe is that should your windows password get changed you will need to clear your saved authentication data using tortoise then update using svn.  If you do this then you cannot connect.

Bugs and Issues / Re: Spell check then EA not responding
« on: September 24, 2009, 01:41:42 am »
Oddly enough I was just reading this in the middle of a spell checking operation .. and yes I have the same problem (on 7.5.848).

The package I was checking had a number of sub-packages - so I'm probably going to check one at time until there is a fix.

Another approach is to export to XMI and then import not forgetting to check the strip guids option.

Obviously this is fine if you don't want to persist links.
