Suggestions and Requests / Resolve Replication Conflict is cryptic
« on: January 10, 2005, 05:59:24 pm »
I would like to make a request for a much human readable information on Resolve Synchronization Errors dialog box. I could not figure out which id is for which object and what is the result of each action produces without going through some tedious work.

At least, u should open that particular diagram and show "graphically' what would happens if the user click overwrite/keep.

Please...  :'(

Suggestions and Requests / My wish list
« on: December 14, 2004, 01:45:01 am »
Here's a list of features I would like to see in EA:
1. Save All (diagrams)
2. Group move/delete in Table attributes and operations dialogs
3. Multiple attributes/operations copy - paste - delete in Project View
4. Ability to copy/move/delete operations and attributes directly on diagram
5. Better data modeling support (eg. view)

Thank u.
btw, I love EA very much. Keep up the good work! ;)

General Board / Re: EA and SQL scripting

thomaskilian is right, I should use the automation interface... it seems like modeling tools such as EA and rational rose prefer VB over other languages for scripting ::)

thanks

standard database does support it but I'm not sure how to do that with .EAP file, cos that's what I'm working with ;D

Also, editing the tables directly would introduce inconsistency if we are not careful enough, so I think there should be some kind of abstraction (view?) to be provided... or they are there already?

We know that EA eventually stores everything into database or .EAP file, isn't it wonderful if there is a built-in support for SQL scripting in EA for tasks such as batch rename, batch copy paste (attributes and/or operations) etc? I personally believe this is a very flexible feature that would definitely increases productivity :D
What do u think? Should I write to feature request column?

Probably this is what u are looking for - Agile Modeling. Have a look at Extreme Programming (XP) too. Personally, I do not believe there is one methodology out there that fits everything. Choose the right methodology for the right project.

Go to Diagrams->Set Visible Relations...

General Board / check constraints for table...
« on: November 11, 2004, 09:41:06 pm »
I'm wondering if this there is something wrong with EA - it takes hours to reverse engineer tables from oracle database. It takes averagely 5 mins on checking constraints for each table. EA 4.1 build 738 was faster.

Any comment, pls...  :'(

General Board / ctrl + click?
« on: November 11, 2004, 05:36:31 pm »
a simple question: I have a list of reverse engineered tables in one folder, how do it move it to another folder all at once? It seems that EA does not support ctrl + click and "select by type" is rather inflexible :-/

thanks.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions, I guess I finally got my project manager convinced and EA is included into the list ;D

It definitely is undisputable that Rose is not the only "other modelling tool", BUT "the real value proposition of applying the UML isn't using a UML tool, it is the advantage of visual modeling quickly sketching in pictures rather than just text, as this plays to a strength of humans to comprehend relationships quickly. It supports better collaborative design and alternative explorations". I really like that way Craig says about this. Take a few minutes off to read it ;)

I completely agree with u, Bruce, but what u can find in EA is available in Rose/System Architect. I would say ease of use but that will not be a very convincing reason to tell ur boss, right? Still, what really makes EA stands out?

Well, I LOVE EA for the simple reason that I don't need to go thru very thick manuals to get started. It really is a tool for modeling, not a tool u must learn before u can start doing ur work!

But my project manager is kinda sceptical. EA is cheap, but powerful enough to support full software development life cycle. But what really makes EA stands out from other heavyweight modeling tools such as Rose and System Architect? Is the price the only reason I can say that EA is superior compare to Rose and SA? There must be something missing somewhere...  :-[

Any comments?
