General Board / BPMN - async call to another lane inside pool

Hi!
We have lane that calls action in another to create pdf and continues process until reaches point when pdf is required and start to wait for it.
1) What is preferred method to call action in another lane inside pool asynchronously? send message event and listen its reply?
2) what about if return link listening event is inside subprocess?
