General Board / Adding a Sub business process diagram into a report
« on: August 09, 2022, 05:17:11 am »
I am creating reports from an existing package which contains various business process diagrams. These diagrams has sub processes in them that I would like to reference in the PDF output. I see that I can output anything in a package but was wondering if it is possible to create a report that includes multiple packages. I am looking to do this because I have these sub process diagrams (common that is done over and over) in higher-level packages further up the tree in the same Model.

I could just include the whole model, but then the document will have more diagrams than necessary. Even if there is a way to cherry pick diagrams into a report, that would be sufficient.

Thanks,
Gregg

General Board / Re: Searching BPMN Sub processes
« on: July 28, 2022, 12:17:18 am »
Hey wivel,

Sorry for the late response. I have a set of parent processes that is being used to show the customer journey through a banking branch. There are several parts of the processes that is duplicated over and over. In the interest of simplicity, I created this common process as a sub process with a new Diagram. The new Diagram has an Activity that is set as a callactivity. This Activity is then linked the top level diagram and I drag it into each parent process.

Hopefully that all makes sense. I followed a video from Sparx that I found online. The issue was that I was unable to find all diagrams that links back to the sub process using the "Search where Diagrams being used" feature.

I think by using the Activity Shape as the reference instead of the business process i am able to search now, but if there is a better way to do this, please let me know.

General Board / Searching BPMN Sub processes
« on: July 22, 2022, 04:45:15 am »
Hey everyone,

Hoping I am just over looking this because it seems like it should be easy to search for.

I have quite a few Business Processes that have diagrams attached to them. I have a common area where I put other processes that I noticed I am creating the workflow over and over again. I am then using the sub process feature of an Activity to link them to a parent process.

I want to be able to find everywhere that the activity (sub process) is being used. I tried the "Find in All diagrams" option but it comes up empty.

Any thoughts in how I can determine how often it is being referenced?

Thanks,
Gregg

General Board / Re: Exporting diagrams from EA to VISIO

For anyone interested, I was able to copy from EA and paste to Visio without issue. Looks clean and fonts and such are fine. It comes in as an image.

I know this is old, but at least 15.1+ it should work fine.

Ahhh. ok, it has the same effect. Got it. So what he is doing creates that matrix!

Thank you both for your information and patience.

Got it. Thanks Henrik. I wish there was a way to do it without adding it and then removing it, but it sounds like doing what Geert did would basically accomplish the same thing.

Thank you wivel. Appreciate the details.  So when you say you linked it to the Activity, is that using a relationship arrow? Like using the Realization arrow in the toolbox? Or is it a property?

Thanks,
Gregg

Does this make sense to you guys? Or am I still off?

Thanks,

Thank you both for your suggestions. So from what I see in the image below from the BPMN example, it looks like in my case the ERP would end up being the Application Component from another one of my packages/diagrams?

Example on site:

Example in EA I have this far.
https://enterprisesarchitect.builders/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Consumer-Deposit-BPMN.png

You will notice I circled in red the area I think would match.

Thanks again for everyone's assistance,
Gregg

Thanks. I think I might be getting tripped up with terminology for the tool. So if I am in the diagram that has the business process (with pools/lanes activities etc.) and I right click on the diagram, I have an option for Changing the view to Relationship matrix. Is that the one you are referring to? If so, how do I now reference it to a different package that contains systems as components? They are in a separate package that I used for creating an application portfolio. This has it's on diagrams to show heat maps and such.

I would like to take these application/system components and some how reference the other business diagrams. This way we can easily connect the dots to what systems provide what business value to which units and which products etc..

Thanks,
Gregg

Thanks  Geert Bellekens!

Really appreciate your quick responses and shared knowledge to a newbie :).

So this BPMN does not have that system in the diagram right because it would be mucking things up. So you are saying that if I change the diagram to a relationship matrix, I can then associate the component even if it isn't in that model diagram or that package?

Just want to make sure I am following.

Thank you wivel and Geert Bellekens.

wivel, to answer your question, you are spot on with Visio. I recently went from Visio to this for obvious reasons and was just looking to make a copy of the "shape". I don't want any linking or same ID, so it isn't something I want to reference to the origional. I just want to have the same font ,color, size. I get a little crazy about various shapes looking weird :).

Please let me know which shortcut is best for that or the click drag.

Thanks again everyone!

q- Not sure what you are referring to. I am using Pools and Lanes (I guess maybe those are not swim lanes). I'm not sure though how this has to do with linking a diagram to a system (Component)? I'm trying to tie a particular system with a process.

Can I please have a step process of how to take a diagram/business process and link it to a Component in a different model/package

Thanks,
Gregg
