Bugs and Issues / Click "Install New Library"
« on: November 15, 2023, 03:57:09 pm »
Hi,
When I try to install the help library as explained here: https://sparxsystems.com/resources/libraries/16.1/index.html ,
After clinking on "Install New Library", EA shows the message "unsupported operation" and then crashes.
What could be the reason?
Using EA 16.1.1628.
thanks,

Not true.
Even a top-level flowchart will go a long in helping to understand the code.
Especially poorly documented legacy code.
I have used Understand quite effectively to review a big project in embedded C which did not have any kind of design documents and code which had almost no meaningful comments.

I missed out in asking about the file format of output.
I want to avoid making all the viewers install the free EA viewer.
So, which output format will keep it as close to the original as possible?
For example, pdf does not seem to support hyperlinks in the document.
So, viewer will find it difficult to navigate through the document.
HTML seems better at that.
Any other common file formats?
thanks,

An IDE like Understand does it.
But I don't know if its output compatible with EA.

I need to customize a template that is used for publishing a diagram.
Do I need to dive into editing it via XML way?
Our is there a tool in EA?

Specifically, I don't want to publish the author and version information in the report.
thanks,

Hi,
The video on youtube Modelling, but the right way is too blurred to be understandable.

You don't neeed any profile since UML can do it the full path. Archimate, BPMN, SysML etc have individual focus on special areas. You could use them but you must not. Maybe you should consider creating your own profie if the project is large enough.

q.

Thanks,
I deviated from "plain" UML because I wanted to go from requirements to code.

The project is small.
It is a simple SCADA.
So, like I said earlier, lack of requirements diagram is not a showstopper.

Looks like in EA, some profile must be selected.
So, should I just select ALL UML and go ahead?

How do I get from requirements document to final code / program in Python?
That's the subject for a book, or even multiple books.

Kinda hard to give you a useful response in this forum, except for: hire a consultant to help you.

Geert

Yes, quite true.
But I am not looking for quick fix.
I am trying to use EA for a python software project development.

Here is another way of looking at it.
Rather long winded...

After the days of punched cards and hex keying of hand assembled code, I graduated to simple text editors.
That is, we got rid of handwriting quality, manual assembly and fragility of cards.

To make it more readable, an editor that has syntax highlighting was the next step.

Now we have IDEs, which also include build, run, step through....
Throw in static analysis and any competent and experienced programmer becomes highly productive.

The gap left is from documentation to code generation and testing, the last manual step.

I have used flowcharts for a few decades and UML (mainly Visual Paradigm) for the past decade+.
But VP by their own admission cannot generate code from flow/ activity diagram, only from state charts.

So, which UML profile should I use for end-to-end solution in EA?

If necessary, I am ready to give up requirements diagram (that is SYSML).
That is, go back to creating just State/ Activity and Sequence diagrams to generate code.

The Architecture design gap is easy to bridge because both done by persons with a higher level of experience and competence.
Now if I can generate even a well-documented code or code skeleton, I will be making juniors very productive.

Hi,
Possibly my terminology is mixed up.
So, I will state my aim/ intention to make it clear.
How do I get from requirements document to final code / program in Python?
thanks,

To keep it comprehendible, I will be only adding diagrams from different perspectives.
Don't know if it is possible in EA, but I will not be mixing perspectives within a diagram.
That is elements from different perspectives will not be mixed in a single diagram.
thanks,
Kalpak

Hi All,
I have used UML till now.
But for generating requirement diagrams, I used the SysML perspective.
However, it seems that the flowchart elements are not the same, specifically showing events in the flowcharts.
Can I mix perspectives in a project?
thanks,

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Re: Generate Documentation

I assumed that the "output to file" text box had a file name and path mentioned in the pop-up file menu was good enough.
That is default values.
Pg7 of the guide, the table Generate and view an example report immediately states that explicit selection is required.
That is not just "model", but the full path and file type must appear in the "output to file" text box for it to work.

I suspect now I don't need the greyed out "print to pdf" menu.
This will also generate the pdf.

Thanks for the guide.

Thanks.
Nearly 24 hours but no response from support.

There are many ways to generate documentation in EA. Which one are you using exactly, which which options?
That is the nightmare with this tool, too many options.
Even print to pdf is greyed out, so looks like there are no default settings.

Valid point.
But I have never been able to generate the output document.
