I had an Atari running in late 80's which had a GUI far better than anything the windozers delivered up to mid of the last decade.

Indeed, you are not the only one.

Suggestions and Requests / Which one exactly?

You mean EA provides an "intuitive" GUI? As a Mac-Developer?

So which intuitive UML Tool are using on Mac OS X then?

Note that I don't mean a tools which can draw a few rectangles but one with round trip code engineering.

Suggestions and Requests / TASKEND /F EA
« on: January 18, 2012, 01:58:05 am »
Again I have kill EA with TASKEND /F EA because the check-in I did while beeing in a meeting stopped dead with an message and now there is not enough time to let it finish (I want to go home now and I need to take the laptop with me) — And most importantly: no ABORT button.

I restarted the “Add to Sourcecontrol” from scratch.

And sure I was greeted with some DAO error on adding the
java.lang package. Which only had an OK button.

I am a senior software developer and I always tell the junior: “An error without indication on how to solve the error is useless. And there is no need to bother the user with error message he / she can do nothing about it. Just write it to the log file”.

And speaking of it: In the last 15 years (or so) all error dialogues for desktop apps I designed hat a history function and were able to display error messages without interrupting batch processing.

Maybe I should start a 2nd thread “Redesign Error Handling”.

OT Don't know how you managed to get this tiny font.

Sorry, I removed the setting.

On a side line: I only use browser which allow me to set a minimum font size because I can't stand small fonts myself. But as a result I never noticed I set the font size ridiculously small. It was certainly not my intend to make reading difficult.

Suggestions and Requests / Redesign Subversion support
« on: January 12, 2012, 06:52:47 pm »
After having used the Subversion support for quite a while with large Java Models I come to the conclusion that the Version Control with Subversion in its current version is completely hopeless and should be replaced with a complete redesign.

The main problem is that the current design does not scale. It works fine with 20 packages but if your work on a Java System with a import of “rt.jar” work becomes a pain.

Add to version control” takes approx 4 hours. That in it self would not be a problem. Just do it last thing in the evening and go hope.

But that too does not work. If there is any problem then the process stops dead and I come back to the workplace to be greeted with error message.

An Error message which only has an OK but not ABORT.

But now it is Morning, now I can't wait for the Add or Checkin to finish.

But as I said: No Abort to be seen. The only option is TASKEND /F EA. Which carries the danger that I corrupt the eap file. An eap file which is not fully added to the version control.

And I have to perform a “Resync status of all packages” — which take another 10 … 15 minutes off my working days.

So what is needed:

  • The Version Control Operation should run without interruption.
  • Errors should be logged to an Error log and a summary should be presented at the end of the operation.
  • The must be an option for the user the gracefully abort the operation.
And Last not Least: ACommit in Subversion should be atomic. It would be much better to first export all packages and then check them with one atomic commit.

+1 And please with reverse engineering.

This is a real pain. You can´t even select multiple packages because only »delete« and »help« works on multiple package.

And this can happen quickly a simple svn commit and you wrecked your Model.

Considering how quickly one might commit on the command line it would be best if EA would not record the status in the model at all.

A quick google search reveals that there are plenty.

Sure, but if there are “plenty” how do I know which works good for EA reverse engineering?

I am not lazy when it comes in using google to solve a problem but »+"enterprise architect" +sqlite odbc« won't give any helpful results.

Of course it there is no answer here I just have to experiment myself.

Aren't there odbc drivers for SQLLite?

Don´t know, never needed one. That´s why I am asking: Maybe someone (i.E. sparxsystems) can suggest one which works well for reverse engineering.

Would not need it for anything else.

The new EA 9 supports now sqlite. And according to the documentation including reverse engineering.

But if one looks at the instruction to reverse engineering a DDL it is all about ODBC.

But sqlite is a database for embedded use which normally does not make use of ODBC. So how should this work then?

Bugs and Issues / Add Branch take forever
« on: July 18, 2011, 05:56:29 pm »
Hello,

Adding another package to the version control (subversion) take forever. Every 30sec I am asked to provide more time for svn log ea0.

If I say yes the dialogue comes back after 30 sec.

If I say no no then after 30sec I am asked to provide more time for svn log ea1 and I am back on square 1.  :-?

This will of course continue svn log ea2 all the way to svn log eaf — needing a total of 8 minutes. A real pain.  >:(

Surprisingly: The add actually worked at the end. Which means all those svn log where not actually needed after all.  :-/

BTW: a svn log ea0 on the command line takes 33 seconds.

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Workspaces and Command

Never mind, found it myself. It is under:

View | Workspaces and Commands…

Once you found that it becomes pretty clear. It's not a bad feature, and now I understand it I won't switch on all menus. Just discoverability could be better.

Martin

On first starting EA 9.3 a new wizard appeared to optimize my menus so I won´t be burdened with unnecessary option.

And then I made the huge mistake and did not click “show all menus”.  :-[

I know that was mega stupid of me. I should have known that something will disappear which which desperately need.

If fact the most important option of all disappeared: The menus for version control. Now I can't check out my model any more.  >:(

So question is: where can I activate that menus again.  :-?
