Suggestions and Requests / Newbies Forum
« on: November 24, 2007, 04:51:53 pm »
I'm just learning UML and EA, therefore almost all is new to me.  I'm thinking there could be a forum dedicated to newbies like myself where we could get started and ask our basic questions.  Just a thought.  What do you think?

Suggestions and Requests / Newbie Questions
« on: October 16, 2007, 12:49:27 pm »
I have a few questions regarding EA and hopefully somebody already has this figured out:

1) How can I specify the location of a particular element, as well as its size/width from a menu or properties option instead of having to manually drag it to a particular location? As an analogy, for example, if you are creating a box in Word, you can specify its location from the top or bottom of the page and can specify its width/height from a menu option.

2) How can I copy/paste single elements so that I don't have to recreate them every time I need a new element?

3) When I was working on the activity diagram in Exercise 2, I lost my label, i.e., the item in brackets: [correct], [trivial problems], etc. and could not find a way to get it back (I tried the hide/show label options but it didn't work). I was wondering if anybody knows how to do this (as well as copying a label and changing its name - again the copy/paste question).

I understand that EA is more than a drawing program and that the elements have links, properties, etc. that makes them more complex than just graphics on the page. However, there should be a way to take an existing element, copy it and change its properties, links, etc. manually very much like the ControlFlow activity relationship (the "arrows") where you can select the Source/Target, line style, etc. I tried the help on EA but could not find an answer. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I have the same problem.  Does it have to do with only having the desktop edition as opposed to the corporate edition?

Thanks for the info and for replying.  I guess the answer was very obvious, duh! :P

General Board / Entity Stereotype
« on: April 18, 2008, 11:45:27 pm »
I'm creating a class diagram and I need to identify my classes as <<control>> and/or <<entity>>.  If I use the built-in stereotypes in EA, the shapes of the diagram changes (from a rectangle to an oval, as described in the documentation).  Is there a way to leave the class shapes alone and just get the word  <<entity>> above the class name, i.e.:

<<entity>>
Student
----------
+ studentAge

etc

I'm new at UML, so hopefully the question makes sense  :)

Uml Process / Requirements Diagram
« on: April 24, 2008, 04:12:21 am »
I'm trying to use requirements captured using Volere's Snow Card into an EA requirements diagram.
A typical requirement in Volere has  the following fields (in bold in this example):

Requirement Name: UI20
Requirement type: X:1
Use-case #: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6
Description: The user interface should use
pastel colors.
Rationale: This will be soothing to the eyes and
will look formal.
Source: Ivan Banks, accounting manager
Daisy Brown, HR director
Fit criterion: The colors used in the user
interface must use a combination of pastel
shades provided in the Microsoft Windows
environment.
Customer satisfaction: 5
Customer dissatisfaction: 4
Dependencies: All the requirements referring to
the user interface.
Conflicts: None
Supporting materials: None
History: Created July 3, 2007

In EA, for e/a requirement I can easily define the requirement Name, Type,  Description: (under notes), History (with date created and/or versioning) and Supporting materials (from the file tab).

Any ideas how to handle the other fields?
Use-case #  -  how can I reference (link) these for the requirement?
Rationale
Source
Fit criterion
Customer satisfaction/dissatisfaction:
Dependencies
Conflicts
[/list]

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Ed.

Uml Process / Newbie Question - Object Diagram
« on: April 24, 2008, 10:23:32 am »
I created a class diagram that has 2 classes (call them ClassA and ClassB respectively).  ClassA depends on ClassB and it's represented by a dependency association in the diagram.

I tried to create an object diagram with 2 instances of ClassB and an instance of ClassA and this is what I found:

* If I give an initial value to one of the attributes of one of ClassB objects, all objects of ClassB have the same attribute value.  Is this the expected behavior?

* To counter this, I set the values in the run state of the object and it allowed me to keep e/a of the ClassB objects with different attribute initial values.  Is this the correct approach?

* I manually set the attributes for the ClassA object with the same initial values of the ClassB objects.  Is there a way to force the dependency and get the "depended of" values automatically?

What are "best practices" to create an object diagram from class diagrams in EA?
I'm fairly new at this and still learning.  Thanks,

Uml Process / Import CSV Files
« on: November 24, 2007, 05:00:24 pm »
I was wondering if somebody could give me a basic step-by-step  process on how to import a CSV file into a new project.  I'm tryng to import a set of requirements into EA and hopefully EA  can get me started with the necessary diagrams.  I read the online help, but I'm still confused.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Automation Interface, Add-Ins and Tools / Sample RaQuest Project
« on: April 05, 2011, 06:52:59 am »
I was wondering if anybody is using RaQuest and would like to share a sample of a "real" project.
Also, I would like to hear how your experience integrating Raquest and EA has been.

Thanks,

Ed.
