General Board / ActivityFinal,ActivityInitial showing up in RTF
« on: February 01, 2005, 12:11:54 pm »
When generating my RTF documentation I select "ActivityFina" and "ActivityIntial" in the "Exclude Details for" list.  However, in my documentation I am still seeing information for those two elements which I do not want generated.  Why am I still seeing these even though I tell it to exclude details for them.

Thanks,
Ryan

General Board / Figures all "Figure 1" in RTF
« on: January 31, 2005, 11:27:50 am »
All of my diagrams generated in the RTF documentation come out with the label "Figure 1".  Is there any way to get EA to increment the figure numbers appropriately?

Thanks,
Ryan

General Board / Ability to keep the same element selected
« on: January 28, 2005, 12:45:28 pm »
There must be an option for this but I haven't been able to find it.  Is there a way to keep an element or connector selected in the toolbox so that I don't have to keep going back to select the element or connector I want after I've dropped one on the canvas for the diagram?

I usually throw all my elements on the canvas and then connect them all.  It's annoying to have to keep selecting the connector over and over in between adding one.

Thanks,
Ryan

General Board / Using use case elements in two diagrams
« on: January 26, 2005, 11:07:50 am »
All,

I'm seeing the tool do something that would normally be useful however in the way that I'm trying to use it (probably incorrectly) I don't want it to help out.   Basically I created a use case diagram.  Now I'm trying to create an activity diagram using the same (linked) use cases to show the flow or order that they normally would be performed in.

However when I do this it has created the links between the use case elements that I create on the Activity diagram on my use case digram.  I don't want those same connections to show on the use case diagram.

Is the best way to get around this just to create an activity element for each use case and then use that on the activity diagram?

Or when I drag the use case element onto my activity diagram shall I tell it to create as an instance rather than a link?

I just tried doing this in two ways?

1.  Already had the use case on the activity diagram as a link.  I used the right-click popup window and told it to convert classified to instance.  When I do this I get the ":" in front of the name and another element showing up in my package in the project view.

2.  If I drag the use case onto the activity diagram and tell it to paste "as Instance of Element (Object)" then I don't get an extra object in my project view tree.  I also don't get the colon.

These two ways of doing this seem to be the same but aren't visually acting the same.  So I'm guessing they're not.  I'm also not seeing the connections made on my other diagrams that are using these use cases.

Thanks!

General Board / Re: Updated Package name but elements not updated
« on: January 26, 2005, 10:26:38 am »
Thanks.  File->Reload Current Project worked.

Minor yes.  However if I had to update all of them manually it would have been a pain.

Thanks!

General Board / Updated Package name but elements not updated
« on: January 26, 2005, 10:02:52 am »
In my use case package organization I currenly created a package where I put all of my actors.  Then I simply link those actors onto my diagrams in other packages.  When I do this I see "(from Package Name)" underneith my actors.

I updated the package name that my actors are located in but the diagrams didn't get updated with the new package name.  They're still showing the old package name under the actors description.

Is there anyway to update this or is it simply a bug?

Thanks,
Ryan

General Board / Re: Suggestion needed: RTF templates

Let me know if this works out for you and how you did it.  I haven't looked into the API they provide.  I was hoping there was a more elegant approach.  If it works though it might be worth checking into.

I've been looking for a way to do this as well.  It looks like they give you a way to customize how each little section is displayed but yes you need to understand the RTF file format.  Not pretty right now!

I was hoping there would be a way to create a template and you could just drag and drop the different elements that EA would spit out into a format and layout that you would want.

I'm not finding it.

It looks like the suggested way is to create a Word document that has the layout you want.  EA creates bookmarks (from what I can tell) in their RTF documents and you could just link to the bookmarks you want in your Word document from the RTF document.

I feel that is a descent approach as most people probably have a lot of other information in their documentation besides what a tool like this would spit out.  Howver, it would be nice to be able to layout how the sections are ordered and displayed.

yes!  I forgot you could do that with EA.  Thanks much!

Kevin,

That was my guess.  I was just retyping in the use case names in the constraint tab so that others will know a given use case is dependant on another being performed first.  I was thinking there would maybe be a way to setup the constraints to show this so when the documentation was created you could trace the order of flow.

However, you're idea of simply creating an activity diagram to show the flow of use cases is a good idea.

Thanks,
Ryan

General Board / Pre-Condition is another Use Case
« on: January 21, 2005, 01:31:16 pm »
If I have a use case where it's pre-conditions (constraint) is another few use cases.  Is there a way these are typically linked?  Or would you just retype the name of the use cases within the constraint tab of your use case elements properties?

Thanks,
Ryan
